Would have kept Jimmy Spencer, not a great player but would have been a better option than what we've had lately with Taylor out.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing though innit.

As I've mentioned too, a couple of times previously when this suggestion came up, we don't know what Jimmy Spencer's wages were spent on in the summer. Squad and budget management is not nearly as simple as many fans make it out to be.

So, we keep Spencer 'just in case'. Who do we sacrifice for the luxury of that insurance policy? Who do we not sign/retain?, what proportion of contingency budget should we have writen off that we then needed for Diagouraga, Vyner and the multitude of keepers?

Finite resources requires difficult decisions. In hindsight yes, Spencer would've done a job there. But in doing so our squad would've been weaker in other areas and who is to say that wouldn't have made us even weaker as a whole over the season.

Jervis too is a decision you could apply hindsight to. But that gift horse was unique, an eighth of a million for someone who was rumoured to be unhappy and wanted away, for nothing, in the summer. You take that all day long in our position.

It is these decisions, tough management decisions, that i am glad we have this board and this manager in place to make. They have done us very well on the pitch while keeping us solvent. Long may it continue.

Funny how Spencer is now seen as the saviour who got away. When he was here there were plenty of people who thought he was useless, he was often referred to as Frank Spencer.

I didn't think he was very good, I still stand by that, I just think his style would have made him a better option than what we've had lately.

How is Garita getting on these days? He's got some talent in him, but didn't seem to find it.

He had some power and pace but he was far far too raw, barely good enough for L2 let alone L1.

Just because one person thought it, doesn't mean that viewpoint has any relevance. It's like suggesting to not offer Hourihane a new contract because some numpty in the Mayflower hates his backward pass selection.

Without Jimmy Spencer we wouldn't have gone up last season. He was involved in a lot of games and a lot of points. Cobi is right to say that Spencer bridged a gap into providing hold up play without Ryan Taylor. Not as good, but intelligent movement and something for our midfielders to work off. We lost a decent back up option in letting him go and arguably paid for it.

It wasn’t just one person, though. There were plenty on Spencer’s back.

A lot of people think Andy Carroll is rubbish. Argyle fans were berating Eaves as 'just a sh** Andy Carroll' yesterday in fact, an hour later he had a hat trick. A lot of fans are ignorant and don't understand strikers who lack pace, don't get a lot of chances and don't score a lot of goals. Trigger had his same share of numpties slating him when he wasn't winning titles. Just because some fans don't understand their game doesn't make them a crap player.

You can get away with half a season playing off a target man, but next season everyone will know how Argyle play, so will have a plan to counter it-i.e. stop Taylor, stop Argyle.

DA needs to come up with a different plan that doesn't rely on one player.

I agree with that. My post wasn’t slagging off Spencer, it was pointing out the hypocrisy of a lot of people on pasoti.

Fortunately Adams does.

You saying he's unstoppable? That's ridiculous, he ain't Harry Kane, he's a lower league journeyman who's had a good half season.

Difference being Tom Eaves scored nearly as many goals yesterday as Jimmy Spencer did in an entire season. I understood Spencer’s game, what he supposedly brought to the team. Unfortunately he was poor at most of the things he needed to be good at to lead the line. Wasn’t great in the air, wasn’t mobile, first touch wasn’t great and his finishing was terrible. Other than working hard he didn’t offer a lot. Ryan Taylor is absolutely miles ahead. We need a back up for Taylor but it needs to be someone capable of taking Taylor’s place. Would love to see us sign Ellis Harrison or Lyle Taylor as an alternative.
