That is true but that was as a result of the reduced number of qualifying places following the Heysel incidentBut Wednesday didn't qualify for Europe when they won League Cup....
Absolutely spot on Cult.
Apart from 91 League cup win when it was a proper competition, third in Division one when it was top flight, League cup and Fa cup final both in same season, UEFA cup competition, Waddle football writers player of the year. Nothing much to report really.
We know we have underachieved in recent times, other than coming a whisker away from PL five years ago. We have been at the top though and most football people with any knowledge, know that we will do again. Even Man City were down at this level at one point.
It absolutely was - and more recently than that.Just the League Cup then. Was it ever a 'proper competition'?
For a majority of them to know or care anything about the history or future of Sheffield Wednesday, your definition of 'football people' would have to be so narrow as to be pretty meaningless.
The overwhelming majority of fans support one of the handful of top premier league teams, take a passing interest in their rotating cast of opponents (about 30 clubs, not including Sheff Weds) and don't give a toss about the rest.
In that context, any league one club proclaiming to be much bigger than any other on the basis of crowd size or playing in the top flight at a time nobody much under 40 remembers, is quite funny.
It would probably be a lot better for football - and for Wednesday fans themselves - if they stopped celebrating the minute differences in size and stature, in the grand scheme of things, between themselves and Argyle or Morecambe, and instead got angry about all of us being so tiny and unimportant compared to Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea etc.
Why not.. Argyle v Wycombe head to head Argyle won 10. Wycombe won 9. There have also been 9 draws.Best not check Wycombe's record v Argyle then Doc
you’re right apols.. must have misread it. We’ll be at least level with them come the end of the season …Check again Janner. It’s the other way around
Hi,It's great to play clubs that bring down large numbers of supporters. For me that makes them a bigger attraction because of the atmosphere generated.
Wednesday are a bigger club historically, have more resources, a bigger ground and better support numbers wise. These are simple facts. However, going forward, who knows what the future holds, but argyle supporters that deny this game meant more than playing Cambridge for example are simply hiding from the truth.
I feel the reaction from some of our support on this thread is more embarrassing than the arrogance shown by some Wednesday supporters thinking they should simply roll us tiddlers over.
The excitement is the atmosphere generated by large travelling support as stated at the start of the quoted post, why would you go to the match otherwise.Hi,
I deny that this game meant more than playing Cambridge.
I am not hiding from any truth.
Do people genuinely get extra excited that we beat a team that used to be quite good but aren't any more?
Good question.Hi,

No, I’m the same Ian.Good question.
I certainly get more of a kick out of beating Pompey, Sunderland and Sheff Wednesday than I do out of beating Burton, Morecambe or Fleetwood.
Does that make me a bad person?
