I want him gone, but l know the board wonât sack him even if we go back to league two this season. I wonât call for him to be sacked it just how l feel about his management style.
Around Xmas time, which isnât very long along many were saying DAâs time is up or that they even realised there were flaws within his tactics that he wasnât addressing that became frustrating.
For me, the poll says take us to the championship. How can we sustain enough good form if you defend every season the same way. We back away and give opposition players time and space to pass, cross and shoot. Of course the argument is he got us promoted doing this. Yet my counter argument is the higher you go up in the leagues the better players use that time and space you arenât pressing them to their advantage. Iâve not seen any change in our defensive style since he became manager to think he has or will address the problem.
He though are my concerns with him.....
- His after match comments where some of his comments are just delusional
- The way we start games. Waiting to see what the opposition do. Often wasting the first 45 mins of games not getting on the front foot
- His in lack of flexibility with one up front. Havenât got a problem him playing it but either find people who can support the forward or find a formation where the striker isnât as isolated from the rest of the team. This happens especially away. Which is why last season for example we were one of the lowest goal scoring teams away from home.
- Tackling. Simple. Stop letting people shadow mark on the edge of the box. Perfect example was Walsall at HP recently. Andy Cook we let compete and win the ball back in our area and then waltz around our penalty area whilst we watched before he finally drove a right footed shot into the net.
He is a streaky manager. Batches of wins come with batches of losses. Like l said before in another thread we have had winless streaks in our first two seasons which often couldnât be halted.
I think we have decent players who excite us. We can play some good football. Yet l ask you if your honest if it wasnât for Careyâs wonderful strike, where was the goal coming from on Saturday? You see despite my criticism above the thing with football is you have to score to win games. Under Adams lm afraid we donât get enough shots on the opposition goal. Can you remember on Saturday the Pompey keeper making another crucial save in the game? And there is the fundamental problem. For all the wonderful skills and flicks when it comes to the final third we simply arenât looking like a team who scores enough âscrappyâ goals. We simply donât get enough of our players in the opposition penalty box.
Thatâs why we always win or lose 2-1 in a majority of games. Unfortunately thatâs why it wil continue under his tenure. We arenât good enough defensive unit to keep clean sheets and we arenât a good enough goal scoring unit to get enough goals to keep covering up our defensive issues.
I like your posts as you always provide reasoning for your views and the reasons as to why you feel the way you do, but the thing that always strikes me is that you talk as though Argyle have a divine right to play glorious attractive football, without any regard for the context. Very few teams can expect to play attractive winning football consistently, being faultless in defence and expansive in attack, but especially not a league 1 team with a limited budget. From your post it reads as though Adams should have Argyle playing with a miserly defence akin to the Milan team of the Baresi early 90's and the attacking creativity of Barcelona under Pep. Sunderland are the biggest spenders in the league and their last few results - 1-1, 1-0, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 0-1. So despite spending far more than Argyle they have not managed to score more than 2 goals in any of their last 6 games and only kept 1 clean sheet. I just dont think its easy to consistently set up a team to score goals and be tight defensively, particularly if you dont have a top budget.
I would love Argyle to play a sort of Eddie Howe, Nathan Jones type football but think Adams' teams have been well organized with elements of flair and at times played some really nice football. The first half of this year was v disappointing but it is very apparent that the upturn in results has coincided with finally being able to pick a consistent, settled back four. For me, under the financial restrictions his record is excellent and I hope he stays. With the grandstand, the club are starting to move forward and I think having a good manager tied into the future plans is a good thing.
You see people think l want Argyle to play some type of âBarcelonaâ brand of football.
Above l have mentioned qualities that l think a successful league 1 club should be able to do on the pitch.
My frustration is formed from the season so far and what lâve seen. At times, when we were performing so bad l sat there wondering why will players like Carey on the field why we couldnât cross, pass or shoot that well. For me, with such good players, we go from a side that looks good with the ball to another match where it looks like most have never played football.
To get out of league one you need consistency. That has to be on things like your passing, shooting, the way you press as a team, the way you defend etc.....
Unfortunately, under Adams we go from being decent to dreadful. Itâs a continuous cycle. Thatâs why you get batches of wins and losses under him. Letâs not forget although we had a good run last season we finished the season struggling. We went from a side who had promotion aspirations to a side completely battered by Gillingham. Itâs not different this season. Only 6 weeks ago we were battered 0-3 by Accrington and the went to Wimbledon who are really struggling, and lost 2-1. This was when people kept saying we turned the corner. This is what happens under Adams. It goes from decent to unexplainably bad. And itâs not the losing. Itâs why did we lose so badly in that manner. I could take the losing IF the reasons werenât most times the same ones. A failure to press, we sat back, lack of shots on goal, the inability to pass to team mates.
This notion that I want to see tika-taka style in league 1 is amusing because l say l want to see good football. To me, good football comes in different styles. I love whipped in crossing/set pieces and bullet headers, wingers/wide men taking on a player, crunching tackles. Most of all l love pace via direct play. That doesnât mean though hoof balls aimlessly up the field.
For a football fan the most important thing is the last result. However, for two/three months we sat watching aimless football with a game plan that failed most weeks. Iâm not saying Adams is the worst manager we have had but l find peopleâs reaction of him intriguing.
Itâs werid l see people change their opinion of him just like our results. His football seems acceptable when we are winning but the style of it comes into question when we lose. Unfortunately, for me itâs questionable whether we win, lose or draw.
Itâs not beautiful football l want to see. Itâs better football.
