The original Torpoint Ferry 1872 this photo was taken whilst it was being decommissioned out of service to make ready for the new one

That would be the first chain driven ferry which came into service in the 1830's. They were described as floating bridges. A huge step forward as the chains meant they could operate in strong tidal flows and bad weather.

Re the pictures of St Andrews Cross (at the top of Royal Parade).

I worked there in the 1980's for Nat West. The story amongst staff was that it had been built as compensation by a construction company who could not pay their debts.

The builders got a few minor revenges, such as rooms that you could only access by going up 4 flights of stairs and down 2. Inevitably, those rooms became the stationary room and another the staff room. 😧
