Doubtless he would take professional advice. However if wanting to advance his career he would doubtless also want to acknowledge the coaching and help provided by Argyle down the years. If he signs an improved contract it does mean that any future sale contract consideration would be inflated by the unexpired value. this would be beneficial to Argyle.
But not beneficial to him.

Salary is the big factor (not necessarily the biggest) in a player (or other members of staff) in signing a contract. This is based on what both parties deem acceptable for the value the employee provides.

Some employees have a lucrative short-term deal which has no value at the end of the contract.

When there is disparitybetween what the two parties deem acceptable, they separate. However, while there is a contract in place, the contract may have to be honoured.

A high transfer bid does not affect the existing contract, but obviously might influence the employer's next offer. The transfer bid is the inducement for the holding club to tear up the contract; the salary is the employee's inducement to sign a new one.

Everyone seems to be missing something here...

NO BIDS FOR COOPER!

In my world that means he isn't sought after, he is still an Argyle player and that we know of hasn't asked to be transfer listed.
All this nonsense about his contract is simply that..nonsense.
No one here knows his contract details, no one knows he ever wants to leave, no one knows if he has a contract lined up to sign and certainly no one knows how transfers are worked out.
So many pretending to know yet none of you are agents or football managers, maybe just stick to playing fifa 22 or championship manager!

I see all parties as winners
By signing a new contract, as you rightly say, he is inflating his value on the market and the potential transfer fee. He is therefore making it more difficult, and significantly more expensive, for someone to sign him. That someone is a club further up the ladder who will be prepared to pay him several times his current salary, If Mike Cooper wants, when the time comes, to maximise his football potential, and his career earnings, he should make himself as attractive proposition as possible and not potentially alienate interested parties.

If you want a better job with much improved pay, you make it as easy as possible for the new employer to offer it to you.

It’s an opinion thread, so what if people don’t know for sure what’s happening but it’s still interesting to read and it passes the time until we see a new “INCOMING” thread. 😁

I don’t think it makes much difference if Michael Cooper were to sign a contract extension on improved terms - he won’t be sold for less than £5m whether he had 2 years left on his contract or 4 years.

This guy got the Twine transfer right.

😬
Just had a delve into his Twitter page and he seems to have gotten quite a few correct. Macey to Luton, Vela to Fleetwood, Jack Clarke to Sunderland.. seems to be on the money with Cullen to Burnley too. Widely reported now but called it in June.

With Pope gone, they have the ageing Hennessey and Peacock-Farrell who they loaned to Sheff Wed last season. It doesn't seem out of the question.

Presuming they rate Peacock-Farrell highly then it doesn't seem like the right move for Cooper at the moment.

I don't know. Hennessy looks like he might be going to Forest and Cooper might fancy a fight for the jersey with Peacock Farrel who is 4 years his senior.

It does look like Hennessy's move to Forest is pending Burnley have another keeper lined up. Reports last week suggested that Burnley were trying to sign Arijanet Muric from Manchester City, let's hope that still is the case and that they're not lining up Cooper now instead.

It seems that theres a merry-go round regarding keepers at City. Carson signed an extension, Bazunu to Southampton, Steffen to Middlesborough, this week signed Ortega. So hopefully they'll be able to sign Muric and the rumour will fade away.
