I‘m going to try and be balanced about what l saw today.

That was bloody fantastic.

So as most know l am very much a fan of the 3-4-2-1. And the reason is because of what l hope many people got to witness at HP today.

The first half was the best football l’ve seen in a while. Argyle controlled the game from the start. However, l would say it took them at least 10-15mins mins to settle down their football as there were initially long balls to Hardie that weren’t directed well.

l will repeat, the thing that a 3-4-2-1 gives us is 3 players in forward positions. Two of them in wide areas of the pitch. Constantly Azaz and Mayor were getting down the sides of Peterborough. And were supported well by Edwards & Mumba. The number of times we got in good wide positions and getting crosses into the box was terrific. Last season we just didn’t have that attacking type of width.

The first goal is a great example of the attacking width. Getting down the sides of a team. Mayor could of had a shot but his pass to Azaz was l guess because he thought he had a better shooting angle. I’m glad Azaz scored but sometimes Mayor needs to pull the trigger himself otherwise we will over play in certain situation. Countless times today Argyle were getting in those type of positions. Last season to be honest l don’t think we got in those situations enough.

Today we had countless chances that we should have scored from. And we must become more ruthless with the opportunities that we have in the future as lm sure opposition sides will make us pay if we don’t.

I know Peterborough changed their formation in the second half. Personally, l thought we were comfortable although they maybe controlled possession more. So when Schumacher changed it to 3-1-4-2 l was surprised. But the changed worked. And this is what Schumacher said about if we need to change things we can. And l repeat it’s important to always have another option. I don’t think it’s healthy to always play 3-4-2-1. You need to be adaptable. But l’m sorry, that 3-4-2-1 today also showed you can make numerous chances with it. What l will say though is lm starting to feel a strong, physical front man would help our system.

To be honest apart from Taylor’s mazy dribble inside Wilson & Edwards l can’t recall Posh every really having too many other efforts apart from Marriott’s first half one.

Argyle continued to see out the game and in fact had opportunities to really punish Peterborough on the counter attack.

The only thing l found annoying today was the ref. I felt at times he didn’t give us many 50/50 decisions.

As for the players today they were immense. Especially in that heat. Edwards was like the Duracell Bunny going up and down that line in the second half.

Azaz looks to me to be the jewel in the crown of this side. Is such a talent. Makes Argyle look brighter in the final 3rd.

Randell was top notch. His display today just oozed class. His passing and vision are just a thing of besuty. And on top of this he works so hard. I’m not a massive fan of Houghton because of the defensive side of his game but today l thought he put in a great performance.

Mumba is the type of player l was trying to explain Argyle needed last season at wing back. First of all he has pace. Secondly, he can beat a player on the outside which gives us better width. Why this guy impresses me though is because of his work rate. He is one minute being tackled after going forward. The next second he is up off his feet racing towards the ball snapping at the oppositions feet.

The trickery he has on the ball was shown by the penalty. When Miller comes back to fitness lm very excited about what they both can do in our team. Mouthwatering.

But l will temper this post down. I said before & after Barnsley how relaxed l feel about the team and our football. I’ve been as positive as you can be about some of the football l’ve seen at home in the last two games. Yet l repeat this team needs time. It’s still a new system and mistakes will be made. Understandings need to be developed. Your not going to click perfectly into a new system after 8-10 weeks of training.

I will also add if we were to lose players to injury, like Azaz, it will impact the team. And that is why l mentioned budget. As those teams like Sheffield Wednesday & Ipswich may also suffer injuries over a 46 game season but cope better with their larger squads. That’s not excuses. That’s just how l personally feel about playing budgets. Winning or losing games doesn’t change how l feel.

We just need to be patient with on field & off field situations. It’s easy for that to be said when we just had a great win. Yet there seems to be plans about our future in the pipeline and we just need to have some faith. I mean it could be worse. We could be run like Man Utd.

Great words. Totally agree with 99% of it (apart from us needing a ‘strong, physical front man’ 😉) 👏 👍

Let us hope these two home League results and Brentford winning 4-0 at half-time will bring an end to the obsessional posts about budgets winning football matches. Brentford starting XI £55m/Man U £424m

l dont think budgets win you a football match.

I think budgets give you a significant advantage over a 46 game season.

You may have listened to the fan forum today where they talked about this financial gulf in our league between those that believe they can go for promotion and those trying to starve off relegation. So for them to mention this they must think it’s a factor.

In a one off match, anything is possible. I mean that’s why we love the fa cup.

Just watching the game back.

First goal is beautiful interplay. Mainly by Mayor. This is how the free role helps him. He’d never be on that right side last season.

Mayor final pass wasn’t great but if you get to see Azaz finish it’s bent around and inside the post. It was a fantastic team goal with four different Argyle players involved.

3 mins later Mayor is dribbling down the left touchline setting up another attack. The fluidity of this formation is just a beautiful thing.

A round peg has finally found his round hole. Although we need him to find his shooting boots. He had a great chance second half from an Edwards cut back.

Mumba second half was like terrier. He just snaps around your ankles. But he has this way of getting out of tight spots too. Love the Mumba penalty jink. Interestingly, the Peterborough fans don’t think much of him on their forum.

I thought their left sided winger Ricky Jay Jones caused us some issues down that left side. Him and Edwards had a great battle. Edwards was fantastic going forward in the second half. Never seen him get to the byline so many times and get crosses in, like he did today.

Atmosphere was good. Turned up a notch after Hardie second goal.

Randell almost running off when substituted. Which is unusual to see a player do when your winning. Argyle coach telling him to slow down.

Sometimes l think you can run at Wilson and get joy if your an opposition player who has got pace.

Ennis worked hard off the ball when he came on.

All the more impressive given Peterborough's "significant advantage" over us... ;)

Thought Whitaker looked good when he cake on, looks very technical with good feet.

Whilst he has skill I thought he was greedy tbh, there was an occasion late in the match where he should have played in Ennis who would have been through on goal.

I’ve not found him to be much of a team player so far imo.

Ennis had a word with him about that and I noticed that he apologised, in that final third sometimes greed is a good thing for a striker.

A lot of talk about tactics and formation, quite rightly, but what about man management?

This was a step up in terms of effort and attitude from what we saw at Fleetwood. Memories are short, but few of us were happy with that second-half performance. The improvement suggests that more than tactical tinkering went into preparing for yesterday‘s game.

Every so often we have a seminal game which somehow defines where we are and where we’re going. I left HP convinced that was one of them. Despite our domination you could see exactly why Peterborough are early season favourites, with strong, very pacey players, and I don’t agree with posts suggesting we made them look a poor side. I also don’t agree that the four half time substitutions were stupid, as many here suggest. The ten minutes of pressure the fresh legs created might have brought a goal, and changed the whole momentum of the game. The fact we withstood it and pressed on speaks volumes about our commitment, and that for me defined the squad we now have. What a great day.

Sadly couldn’t make the game yesterday, but delighted to hear how well the boys played.

Congrats to Shuey and the whole team.Very happy to be proved wrong after my criticism of the side after Fleetwood.

I still think we need some re-inforcements ( particularly that no 9 which the squad is missing IMO)

The magic word is “consistency”- because promotion seasons are built on winning when playing badly, not winning when playing well as we did yesterday.

Here’s hoping....

Big difference for me is that we are far less predictable than last season. As well the co-incidence of getting the top 7 teams in the last 7 games of the season (or something like that) I believe our predictability found us out in the last part of the season as teams worked out how to negate us. This season with more fluidity in positions and more of a mix between long and short balls it is going to be far harder to do that I think
