What fee would you say was 'sound business'?

We hold zero negotiating cards - one year to go on his contract and now a public statement that he can leave. The whole episode has somewhat bizarrely been carried out in public. Even the fact that we offered him a contract extension. Presumably to send a message to his agent. It's just a very very amateur way to do business.

There's no way we'll get a realistic price now.
Yeah cos nobody would know especially the agent unless it was put in The Herald. Naive post.

Massive blow. Simple as that.

Where you find another one, and we needed one more plus him, on our budget then lm not sure.

Gutted.
Been expecting it since January when we offered the extended contract with more money. He didn't sign it so he was obviously looking to leave. If he were to stay now then he'd be looking for a January transfer and if that didn't happen he'd be protecting himself to avoid injury before the end of the season and his free transfer.

So how much do you think quality additions cost these days? You haven't thought it through.

How much did last summer's quality additions cost?

And I'm saying this summer we need only 2 or 3.

We've shedded x4 loan players, Luke McCormick and probably George Cooper.

And our playing budget has improved.

Why won't be be able to make a few quality signings now we've kicked on?

You haven't thought it through.

Bit childish to repeat my own sentences don't you think?
So we actually need SIX players just to get back to where we were. Or you don't think the loan players need replacing?

Imho the braver option would be to keep the team together for another year (or at least the best players still under contract like Camara), look to add 2 or 3 quality additions and aim for promotion.

The easy option would be to cash in.

History repeating itself?
Not necessarily. We operate or aim to operate in a similar way to Brentford. They narrowly missed promotion, sold Watkins and Benrahma their two star players for huge money and then got promoted buying Toney cheaper and no doubt will make a handsome profit on him when Newcastle or someone come calling.

Makes sense to me, cracking player but we have to try and whip up a bidding war and see what offers are out there.
If a club will offer £500k+ now to get him on a 3 year contract, let them offer it. Let his contract run out and he could go anywhere. If the bids aren’t what we hoped for, we can always turn them down.

Let’s see who wants him and how badly they want him.

I agree with you JJ, Brentford are the club to aspire to.

The crucial difference though is that Brentford’s model involves them tying new signings to much longer contracts (4+ years for both of those you mention, plus extension clauses) meaning they are not left in the same situation as we are with Camara. They have the vision to factor in player sales from the outset (ie an exit strategy) ensuring they extract full value from their wee nuggets. Not all will pay off but over all their ROI is handsome. We can’t get a good fee now for Camara unfortunately. Had it been Brentford not Argyle, they never would have found themselves in such a precarious position in the first place.

Only one problem with the Brentford model.

To get out of League one in season 13/14 they spent £350,000 on Will Gregg. Hallett said we won’t spend this type of money on transfer fees.

What is worth more to the club: selling Camara this summer or promotion to the Championship? Because without Pan our chances of going up next season are vastly reduced.

I agree with Justin, this is a bad decision by the club.
I hate to be negative, but we aren’t going up next season.
We have just had what felt like a spectacular season and didn’t even make the playoffs.
Camara is likely going, I’ll bet Cooper attracts a bid or two too good to turn down, so that’s the engine and the handbrake gone. We simply won’t afford like for like replacements - they’re Championship players and we just had 40+ games out of them. It will be as nasty as trying to find replacements for Sonny Bradley and Zak Vyner, and ending up with Scott Wootton and Niall Canavan. Ashley Smith Brown and Tafari Moore instead of Gary Sawyer and Oscar Threlkeld - a defence ordered on Wish.
We’ll try and find as best we can, but to improve on what’s departing? Forget it.
We just need to trust the process, identify potential, invest in young talent, seek out the players with attributes that fit in our system.
If Camara goes, we’ll have paid next to nothing for a player, had two great seasons out of him and sold him for a profit. We can’t be bitter about that, Camara has more than upheld his side of the deal and has clubs lining up to throw money at him.

Now where is the next raw 22 year old with outstanding potential ready to dominate League One?

Guess Pan was on £2k to £3k pw. We might offer to double but he could earn x4 or x5 elsewhere. Who would turn down such an opportunity. Can’t blame Pan. But Argyle still hold the upper hand that he is under contract. Listening to offers, should be in the region of £1m - peanuts to a championship club. If clubs are offering £3m for Scott Twine, it doesn’t seem totally unreasonable.

Would Crawley have a sell on clause? We need a proper Plymouth price on this one.
He turned down a new contract at Crawley and was subsequently signed on a free, he has previous.
