Echoes of Doncaster home and away last season. Beat what appeared to me to be a superior technical team by rolling our sleeves up, getting at them, scoring off a set piece and riding our luck. Not always easy to watch, but it's a results business.

1) And so to the first home game of the season. Good to see a good turn out from an away team that wasn't within 130 miles of Central Park. Surprised that Lameiras didn't start and the bench revealed the sparsity of talent to play up front.

2) Charlton dominated possession and their passing was a class above Argyle's. Luckily their number 9 missed two golden opportunities from set pieces whilst McCormick made a great save to keep the scores level and another that put him as the sand out player of the first half. The quality of Charlton play was off-set by a whole new level of diving and game play.

3) At the other end Argyle created a few good opportunities. A cross from Jervis that neither Blissett or Grant could get a touch to and a Carey free-kick that wasn't close enough to bother the keeper were the pick, although the goalie was brought into use by a couple of shots too.

4) Half-time with both sides on the attack - a Miller attacking header just over followed by a Charlton counter-attack. Miller had a solid first 45 and was unlucky to be booked for what was clearly a dive by the Charlton 11. Good halves for Sawyer, Fox, Sarcevic Jervis. Blissett not quite at the races but he was living off scraps. Carey wasteful in possession.

5) The second started with more Charlton possession but McCormick's kick down field was chased on by Blissett and Jervis. The Charlton defender conceded and Carey's corner was headed down by Edwards and Jervis finished.

6) As he half wore on Argyle began to look tired and it felt like fresh legs were needed. Charlton kept possession well all game and Argyle spent a lot of the game chasing. Grant and Jervis worked hard defensively as well as running a lot of channel balls. A Charlton player went down in the box. It was either a penalty or a booking for diving - the ref gave neither.

7) Into the last 15 and Argyle were sat far too deep. We needed to get up the pitch further but Blissett had neither he pace or guile to hold the ball up. Lameiras replaced Blissett, initially he went up front, surely he wouldn't stay there? Lameiras it was though that won the ball back twice on the edge of our area before setting Jervis on his way for a solo run which ended with keeper being unable to stop his shot from going into the corner to double the lead.

8 ) Charlton will probably feel they did enough to take at least a point. They found McCormick in form and a stubborn Argyle defence. For Argyle it was another lesson in the step up in quality and also that there is still no substitute for all round pace and quality finishing.

9) Into injury time and Argyle spent more time defending. Charlton got more desperate but couldn't find the ball that would open the defence. They resorted to lumping balls in which was never going to be effective. No time for Ness to touch the ball as Jervis was subbed in the 94th minute. A good win and we're on our way.

Luke McCormick - 9
Gary Miller - 7
Ryan Edwards - 8
Sonny Bradley - 7
Gary Sawyer - 7
David Fox - 8
Antoni Sarcevic - 8
Graham Carey - 7
Joel Grant - 8
Jake Jervis -9
Nathan Bissett - 4

Roberrt Te Loeke - unused
Yann Songo'o - unused
Aaron Taylor-Sinclair - unused
Jamie Ness - 5
Lionel Ainsworth - unused
Ruben Lameiras - 6
Gregg Wylde - unused

Thought Blissett was slightly better than a 4 but agree with the rest. A few times I saw Adams telling Blissett where to stand as he wasn't where he was supposed to be. He just didn't seem aware when balls were played to him into the channels, except he didn't make the run. However, he did put a shift in.

Some of the messages on here are ludicrous anyone would think we had lost 2-0 with all the negativity. Charlton are a good footballing side, and over the season will likely be in the top 6. They had a lot of possession in the first half and did look dangerous at times with a great save from Luke and a greater saving header from Edwards keeping it level. However argyle had there own chances and could just have easily scored. Argyle seemed happy for charlton to have the ball as most of the football was played in front of them. After half time Adams had clearly said to close down more as there seeemd more urgency. A good corner from Carey resulted in a jervis tap in after a knockdown from Edwards. Charlton looked shell shocked and out of ideas aswell as clearly tiring. For all there effforts in the first half they had nothing to show for it and changed were made for them. The momentum then shifted again as it seemed argyle needed some fresh legs. An equaliser seemed more a case of when and not if but a great breakaway and composed finish from jervis finished it. Charlton a good footballing side but no cutting edge, argyle tactics spot on second half and deserved the win by the final whistle. To suggest we was lucky to win to me says you wasn't there. As many keep pointing out on here football is a results based business, we got the result we needed you make your own luck. If we would of lost this forum would be in meltdown, comments like "it'll be a long season" "relegation battle" blah blah blah

Ness 5 average - he couldn't get any bethere or worse.

Blissett - below average his contribution was little and it would have been better if he had not played.

So Blissett gets no extra points for actually touching the ball?
Blissett's accolade from the crowd sort of negates what you say tbh.
Blissett looks obviously inexperienced .. he is!

Really good game. I felt comfortable 2nd half, don't think charlton really threatened after we scored.

I thought we were reactive and lacking any tempo in the first half. Picked up in the second half but a lot of work to do. All the defenders look uncomfortable on the ball. Edwards did improve and has a passing range but Sokolik is our most composed ball playing defender. Gary Miller's distribution is awful and is simple not upto this standard.

I want to like Sarcevic but gosh he needs to improve. He simply has to contribute far more than he does or else we need to look at getting someone like Ness in.

Grant looks intelligent and recycles the ball well. Useful player. Blissett is far too nice for such a big lad. Our forwards unlike Charlton's are/were too rigid. Lacking fluidity.

Quite simple - performance devoid of any real energy or tempo initially. Lack of basic competencies and off the ball movement by the midfield. McCormick and Jervis our best players which tells you everything. Big improvement needed quite frankly. Very lucky to win.

Performance devoid of energy?

You clearly weren't there.
Indeed, very odd. Sarcevic played well today, covered alot of ground and Sokolik might be better with the ball at his feet but Edwards was defensively superb. It was a controlled performance and hard to criticise hence why the above post is odd.

Was there and agree with Frank_Butchers and Neilz5419 assessments. A good game played by two footballing teams. Blissett was a hard worker today and will benefit from the experience, hopefully him and Grant will become a bit stronger and hold onto the ball better.
Overall we looked quite comfortable at this level and there's still a lot of gelling and understanding that can be developed.
Optimism is at the forefront today.

Great result for us against a team that oozed quality. In truth charlton could have been out of sight at half time. A neutral would have thought we were the away side in the first half. Fortunately our defense was on its game and Luke had a blinder. I thought we set up the only we we could with what we have and looked to contain and counter. Had Charlton gone in front I reckon we may have struggled. We look short on quality going forward with a lot of our players not comfortable moving the ball around. Although that's probably unfair. I thought Blisset was poor but a couple of charlton fans I got chatting with thought he was really good which left me thinking what do I know. I'm over the moon with the way today went. There will be plenty of teams nowhere near as capable as Charlton are. Finding a way to beat them without playing very well is a very good sign. Our aim has got to be stay in this league for now. Over time perhaps we can add quality and evolve the football style a little and still be effective.

I was really impressed, and thought Charlton were disappointing. Once we worked out that they didn't have a quality final ball we grew in confidence, and they never looked like equalising. We're just so comfortable defending a lead, and they didn't build up a head of steam at all. The first 25-30 minutes were concerning (what a save that was from McCormick) though; I can see us having a few home games where we lose a couple of early goals.

Lots of great points made already!

Firstly, the quality of the game. It wasnt your rough n tumble type match. Both teams tried to play football. Credit to Charlton for coming to our place and having a go. It meant Argyle could play their counter attacking style and that resulted in a good game.

So Argyle started off like many matches l remember at HP last season. Their passing was abit loose, they sat deep and invited Charlton onto them. It meant Charlton could attack Argyle from side to side with very little pressure when they got on the ball. When out wide they could either send a cross in or come inside or pass inside. This often caused Argyle many issues as would result in them getting a shot away or a header in the box.

We had McCormick to thank and some poor finishing by the Charlton no9 Magennis. He had a couple of headers he should have done better with. McCormick saved at the near post from him from a tight angle but his best moment was the double save. First a tremdous low shot arrowing to the corner. Then Magennis from the 6 yard box tries to force it in but McCormick again deflects it onto the bar.

When McCormick was beaten Edwards was brillantly postioned to clear it off the line when a shot just inside the area was driven towards goal.

Charlton were very unlucky not to be in front.

That said Argyle in the first half had their moments too. Grant, Carey and Sawyer seem to be linking up very well. Grant may go under the radar but l think we might of just found a very clever player. He gets involved by linking up with team-mates. Takes up great postions. Doesnt really beat a man but then one of his crosses was so delicious you wouldnt have to. Unfortuately Argyle could not get a touch. The same as with a great Carey cross. Jervis almost turned in the box in the opening mins but could not quite get that shot in. When Argyle did go forward they looked decent. The problem was we were a little too much on the back foot.

So second half it felt like Adams changed it tactially. Not quite sure if he played a flat 3 accross the midfield but whatever he did worked a treat. Argyle, were still playing deep, the difference though was Charlton werent able to walk up to our 18 yard line because we hounded them when on the ball. Suddenly they werent shooting from just outside the box but from 10 yards further back. They couldnt seem to play through us. Argyle became the stronger side. Sarcevic inpartular standing out. Winning the ball and strong running on the centre-right of midfield when going forward. Fox had a great chance just inside the area. Fox decided to side foot it instead of blast it and his effort was tame...

The goal came from a beautiful 40 yard pass from Edwards at the back. He set Jervis away and resulted in a corner. A decent ball in...Edwards heads back in towards Jervis and yet again the main in the right place at the right time...

In the first half Argyle tried a couple of different set pieces. One in partcular saw Jervis run from the back of a group...Charlton defenders ball watched as Careys low cross to middle of the box found Jervis who hit it first time but unfortately was blocked. At Torquay and against Cardiff l saw a couple of rehearsed corner set pieces which were different. Seems like we have been working on them and something to watch out for.

So the game carried on with Argyle feeling that although they gave away terriority that they were now in control. Charlton though have some very decent players. Holmes being one of them and he reminded Argyle how dangerous he is. Fantastic inswinging cross from the right. Magennis again with the chance. Great first touch. Looked like he brought it down and was about to score. Yet the cross was hit with so much power that it may of caught him off balance as after his first touch he fell backwards. Fortunate again.
Yet to be fair this was Charltons only real chance l can remember second half. Sure they had some long shots. One low drive troubling McCormick a little. Yet Bradley and Edwards were dominant in the middle.

You could tell Charlton players were getting frustated. Billy Clarke was subbed and wasnt happy at thia decision.

Carey nearly made it 2-0. A throw in where Charlton fell alsleep. He drifts inside and unleashes a rasping drive. Almost a Carey special. Goalkeeper wouldnt of got close as it went a couple of yards wide it seemed.

Charlton kept pressing and this is where the second goal resulted from. A break away and Jervis was gone...defender back off to his box and Jervis moved inside to hit a low drive in the corner. Goalie got his hand to it and may of done better.

The game from here petter out somewhat.

What l liked is seeing Argyle defentely have signed some interesting players. Edwards could be something special. The way he pings balls forward is so nonchalant. Grant takes up good postions and l like the way he links up with Carey. Yet one or two of current squad from last season caught my eye too. Sawyer was good going forward and back. Sarcevic was tremendous in the second half. Getting forward and getting stuck in.

Today we had the good fortune we didnt have against Peterborough. We rode our luck. Could of been two down. If Argyle keep giving time and space to decent league one oppostion we will get punished at times throughout the season. Yet if we show the same endeavour, work rate and commitment like in the second half there is no reason that with a couple more additional signings of quality we cant have a soild season. My concern would be thougn how much better we are when we press other teams, even when sitting deep, so to sometimes allow good sides so much space and time on the ball like ib the first half is a tactic that will cause us issues this season if we keep doing it.

Great home start to the season though, as Charlton looked and played like a decent side with a stuctured passing game with a couple of very talennted wide men.

Superb result against a decent footballing side. The style of play works for us and hard work sometime bring it just rewards. Players work their socks off and defend the box superbly. Let teams have the ball in front of us make them work for opportunities. Yes some teams will be better than us and unlock the defence but more often than not we will hold firm. We have a happy knack of taking our chances when they come and have enough people who contribute goals to not worry too much about that elusive striker we all crave.

Today's performance was typical of last seasons performances although higher in overall quality from both sides. May not be pretty but it t will see us have a steady first season back in league one

Wasn't there but its amazing the difference in viewpoints. The negative posters should consider Charlton have spent money and we are a couple of strikers short so an excellent result. Whats the point in rating Ness when he was only on for seconds?

Just settled in here for an eveing in Plymouth, after a tough run on the M% and a tough game.
Thoughts?
We played good, composed football in the first half, and while even then I thought we lacked an edge we created a couple of good opportunities. The way the game went coud be judged by the noise levels as Plymouth were silent for the first twenty minutes, but they began to knock balls over the defence, and their overlap on the wings created some real problems. At half time I thought 0-0 looked fair but not likely to last, and my mate reckoned Plymouth would win 1 or 2 nil. The second half was different. Our neat passing game went nowhere, and when Plymouth went ahead, they shut up shop, and we really didn't look likely to equalise, bar a half chance for Mag, just before the second goal. The support trailed off, as the fans had nothing to get excited about, and some bellend lobbed a flare onto the pitch after the second goal, just to make us look like poor losers.
In the end, it's just a balance to last weeks heroics, but either the cteative side needs a boost, or e need a striker who can make space to recieve the ball. Mag received almost no service in the second half, but as he was coming bck from injury, he might also have not been at his best. No matter, plenty there for KR to worry about. And a definate nod to everyone who said the squad was too light.
Finally, the away kit today? FFS, red would have been a much better contrast to the Plymouth kit. The new blue kit is nice, but it blended in with the surroundings"

Seems they rate us more than some of our own fans do which is worrying.
