Came across this photo recently. It’s my Granddad (and my Dad) in front of the Smeatons Tower on The Hoe. This must have been roughly 1954/55.

I never knew Smeatons Tower wasn’t always red and white!

Things have changed so much its hard to work out the layout of then against how it is now!
What is that road where the two buses are coming from?

That's lovely. And yep I remember being very confused when I first saw the famous Beatles pic, anyone know when it was painted red and white?

I would put a guess on it mid to late 70s.

And I was also thinking the Guinness building remained, but seems that was actually totally replaced by Drake Circus shopping centre, and the current Roundabout is a separate building further north. That would never happen nowadays, it would have been preserved somehow.

The edge of the building on the extreme right is where Burtons was on the ground floor and the Woods/Monroe's club on the top floor.

The two buses on the right are coming from Ebrington Street (much longer then) and the bus on the right is heading out of Old Town Street and onto Tavistock Road.

That sounds about right. I remember it being all white when I were a lad.
