Gillingham had this dilemma when Bradley Dack was in his last year. They turned down an offer of over £2 million when he had over 2 years left. In the end the club cut their losses and sold him for a decent 750k.
I think we have to be realistic about our chances of promotion, looking at the size of clubs we're competing and the funds they have available, which we will always struggle to match. It'll take an exceptional season with all the planets aligning. Meanwhile to be honest I'm happy to watch good quality, competitive football against decent teams. You can’t blame Camara if another club will offer him three times as much as our best offer. However, it is still frustrating when we are unable to tie in one of our better players on a longer contract. To a point, I do get Hallett’s prudent approach on the overall budget . However, how are we going to attract new players and keep our better players when there are ex Premier League and Championship clubs spending big money just to get out of League 1 ? We massively over- achieved last season and I would be surprised if we were able to substain this with low to mid table budget. If we finish mid table next season, will fans be happy with that ?
This always get said when a popular and skilled player leaves. And it's never true. What is worth more to the club: selling Camara this summer or promotion to the Championship? Because without Pan our chances of going up next season are vastly reduced.
I agree with Justin, this is a bad decision by the club.
