Blimey, now where have I heard that recently?
The problem is, whenever England come up against so-called superior nations in major tournaments, we shrink away, giving far too much respect to the opposition.
England have had 19 Managers, Southgate comes 2nd in the win percentage over all games, he tends to experiment in friendlies, but has the most wins, and highest percentage, of any previous England manager, and has by far the best points per game ratio, in major qualifiers/tournaments of any England Manager; better even than Alf Ramsey. Statistically, Gareth Southgate is the best England Manager of all time; excluding friendly results, like yesterday. The problem is, whenever England come up against so-called superior nations in major tournaments, we shrink away, giving far too much respect to the opposition. When we lost on pens to Italy, we scored early, had them on the ropes, then sat back and waited for a response and got it. We shrank similarly against Belgium (twice), France and Croatia. He stifles talent with the rigidity of his tactics.
And in these qualifying rounds and group stages who have we come up against to make us such world greats?England have had 19 Managers, Southgate comes 2nd in the win percentage over all games, he tends to experiment in friendlies, but has the most wins, and highest percentage, of any previous England manager, and has by far the best points per game ratio, in major qualifiers/tournaments of any England Manager; better even than Alf Ramsey. We've qualified for every single European and World Cup that Southgate has been in charge and done well in all of them, finishing 4th (Kane missing a sitter at 1-0 in a 2-1 QF defeat after 2 late goals) and QF (missing out on extra time/pens against (No. 1 ranked) France when Kane missed a 2nd half pen) in the World Cup, and going down on pens in the final of his only Euro Cup so far.
What/who are you actually wanting to replace Southgate, and do a better job? ... who exactly have you got up your sleeve?
Yes realistic, unless you are in to yawn fest football which is what Foster and of course Southgate serve up with their negative "tactics"?REALISTIC ?? Ho Ho Ho and by the way it is always `Jam First` Go on - give me another yawn emoji !!
The simple answer is that Southgate's England have qualified "top" of their group in EVERY tournament qualifying group while he's been England Manager; I think Ramsey's England failed to reach the World Cup Finals in 1974 ...And in these qualifying rounds and group stages who have we come up against to make us such world greats?
What makes him better than Ramsey?
These are genuine questions but two more, what are the answers to the same question RE Ramsey?
Schuey persisted with “crab “tactics and some fans were delighted!Yes realistic, unless you are in to yawn fest football which is what Foster and of course Southgate serve up with their negative "tactics"?
Many thousands of fans at Argyle and Millions of fans of England, can see what you are a dribble of others cannot see, that it is negative football, allowing the opposition to dominate games and stifle the attacking players, giving too much respect to "superior" teams, if that is how they think it should be then fair enough but for the vast majority of people they want to see football as it should be played, not on a classroom wipe board but on the grass going toe to toe with every single team, showing no respect because your team has a "big name", Brazil are the ultimate world champions and rightly so, teams like Leeds United have their history but they shouldn't be shown so much respect that you allow them to dominate whilst you pass sideways and backward all game and occasionally lob it forward in the hope that someone gets the ball to stick and starts and attack with a hopeful goal at the end of it.
I have just had a look at the qualification round for the 1974 tournament..The simple answer is that Southgate's England have qualified "top" of their group in EVERY tournament qualifying group while he's been England Manager; I think Ramsey's England failed to reach the World Cup Finals in 1974 ...
I reckon all England Managers pit their wits against pretty much the same nations, they can only beat what's put in front of them; Ramsey maybe has more wins over Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia than Southgate ... GS is good, but he's doesn't have that level of magic.
However we were one of the highest scoring teams in the league, we attacked teams regardless of the sideways passing, but Foster seems to want the ball passed back to whoever is in goal on a regular basis before it is hoofed down the pitch for it to be returned.Schuey persisted with “crab “tactics and some fans were delighted!
At the risk of repeating myself you are forgetting we lost “our engine room “ in January and failed miserably to replace Azaz and Cundle. However we were one of the highest scoring teams in the league, we attacked teams regardless of the sideways passing, but Foster seems to want the ball passed back to whoever is in goal on a regular basis before it is hoofed down the pitch for it to be returned.
Some argue that we are facing some hard teams or have done, which is a fair point, but we had already played some of these teams already this season and gave them all a game barring Bristol City when Shuey decided to throw the game.

Hardie and Whittaker are being starved of any service and living off scraps
I was 6 years old, and not really zoned in at that age, but that was the famous qualifying group where Brian Clough referred to the Polish 'Keeper as a "Clown" ... England were massive favourites for that group ... Wales were very poor then, and Poland hadn't qualified for the World Cup since 1938, so weren't really fancied.I have just had a look at the qualification round for the 1974 tournament..
THREE TEAMS
Wales 0 England 1
England 1 Wales 1
Wales 2 Poland 0
Poland 2 England 0
Poland 3 Wales 0
England 1 Poland 1
Just three teams in a qualification round unlike today where you have 6 7 or 8 so more chances plus back then it was 2 points for a win.
England finished second in that mini league losing out to Poland by a point.
I wasn't alive when this happened so I couldn't tell you how good either team was but I thought I would share this as I asked the question so found the answer
Cundle keeps getting mentioned as a big loss but he didn't have much influence in his last 10 games with us - six starts, four sub appearances, one goal and one assist (both in the same game) so not as big of a loss as Azaz.
Cundle's best period was earlier in the season between September and early October.
