The step from youth to senior level is a massive leap.

Not many young players will be able to make that leap.

In reality it means that young players need to be producing or at least to show that they are capable of producing man- of- the - match performances, which demand their inclusion in the next and then subsequent games thereafter.

I haven’t seen that from Ryan Law .... YET....

He's only started like eight games and already been on the end of two absolute pastings, 6-0 and 5-0 (both at home!), and directly cost us multiple goals... This season v Portsmouth (too weak contesting the header at the far post) and Crewe (winger cutting past him far too easily) and then last season diving in for a penalty v Sunderland (he did the same thing v Oxford this season, fortunately the player was offside but Law didn't know this at the time).

More generally, he struggles to compete physically and still looks surprised by the speed of pro football, frequently getting caught in possession or trying to take on players who prove much quicker and stronger than he is.

That sounds harsh but just wanted to correct the assertion that there is 'simply no evidence' that he's not the required standard when unfortunately there is quite a lot.

There is also some evidence to the contrary. He's taken a couple of goals well and seems to have a decent ball on him. I don't even think it was a bad decision to give him another contract, just that it would be to put him in the team. Right now he looks like the sort of player (lightweight and inexperienced/error prone) that I'd associate with sides that get relegated.
This is the problem/difficulty. If he is deemed not good enough to be put in the team then he won't be put in the team and then no-one ever finds out whether he might actually be good enough or not. In that case there's no point in giving him a contract. He SHOULD have gone out on loan last season and/or the one before to get the development from a season's worth of games but I guess he was always 'needed' to provide cover in the LWB position. Perhaps he is only seen as cheap cover and there is no intention to actually use him for anything other than the occasional stand-in game. I suppose if he is cheap enough then that's fair enough.

This is the tricky part of recruitment.

Whoever we get now has to be better than what we have.

So in midfield we need better than Houghton, Camara & Mayor. At wing back we need better than Edwards / Grant. Up front we need better than Ennis, Jephcott & Hardie.

Now people might say we need different attributes too. But to raise the standard of this team overall you need to push some of the current first team down to the bench.

I’m not sure Purrington improves up greatly at LWB.

I'm not saying that BP is definitely the answer if CG was to leave, but my question to those who are dismissing BP as being beneath us, who WOULD you sign as a LB/LWB who is within and budget and happy to relocate to the SW?

Because if there aren't any who are at a good age, have played over 100 odd first team games as well as experience of Championship and L1 football, then Purrington would appear to be our best option.

Purrington has no personal regard for Argyle, so I would say throw that idea out. He would also be after the best pay packet he can get and I don't believe argyle would be willing to pay out that kind of money anyway.
Players do come back and play well, but I believe if Grant goes this is Laws time to step up and prove himself. He's a very good player and has the confidence like Grant to go forward and take a pot shot. His goal against Birmingham made the club a lot of money and his 2nd goal proves he has the ability and confidence everyone's saying he hasn't got. Defensive frailties, based on a couple of mistakes he's made, others have made a lot more, how come no one remembers them.....

Will he enhance the playing group we already have- only the management team will know whether he is the calibre of player we are looking for - you could say we have moved on as a club since he departed & we might not be the type of club he is looking to sign for

My gut feeling is Law will be heavily assessed during press season and if now markable improvements have been witnessed by the first few matches he will probably go out on loan until January providing we get in addition's

Or Law will play well during pre-season and Shuey and the management team will give him more opportunities this season … this is what I’m hoping for. 👍

Absolutely right, Ben loved his time at Argyle - Adams wanted to cash in on him and he got a really good contract at Rotherham.
Why would Adams want to cash in on him, did he get the money to spend on players?

As I started this subject following a throw away conversation, I find dewsnips comment interesting. He didn't say that the interest wasn't ongoing, surely if there was no interest he would of said we have had a conversation and no further interest.
