If we’re serious about promotion we shouldn’t be experimenting in a match against a key rival.

Someone else mentioned starting Edwards in the Houghton role and moving Broom to RWB, where he was so effective for Cheltenham. This sounds like the best solution to me, since it requires the least personnel tweaks, thus provides the least likelihood of stifling our all-important momentum.

Mayor starts and Grant stays as LWB.

IF, Randell is not picked then it raises a serious question about his immediate future at the Club. He hasn't been sent on as a sub for either wing back roles and if he doesn't replace Houghton on Saturday - where does it leave him?

He was indeed poor in the EFL cup - but even if he had a great game - I am certain he wouldn't have been picked ahead of Houghton for the next game. With Houghton being so instrumental to our early season form then Randell hasn't had a sniff, but surely he has to be picked now?

Any solution that keeps Mayor on the bench please.

It’s the role itself.

if Randell’s looking for a career as a CDM at L1 or above, he needs to bide his time. Similarly to CBs, it’s a risk to play a younger player there; it takes maturity in mind and body, plus experience.

The good news is that time is on his side. He’s, what, 10 or 11 years younger than Henderson at Liverpool, for example?

Can't see Randell being picked in such a big game.
Edwards for me
The kid has to be given a chance surely?

I’d be surprised and disappointed for him not to start on Saturday.

He’s had a full weeks training and I’m sure Houghton has been with him all week to nurture him with tips and confidence.

I’d happily wager a bet that he starts Saturday

I really like his distribution etc but worry that he isn't there physically yet.

As others have suggested I would pull Camara back to support Edwards in a 3-2-3-2, put Broom at RWB and Mayor in a 10 role. I would also certainly play Garrick upfront ahead of Jephcott on current form..

We are top of League so change the system, positions. What about playing the kids instead?

Exactly, Mayor needs to understand that he needs to track back and oh, the odd tackle would help the team.
I think you are being harsh, DM regularly tracks back and already does more than the 'odd tackle'. His recent performances have also (thankfully) included the 'end result' that he has previously been (with some reason) criticised for.

One thing that Houghton has brought to the role this season is the crisp, first-time passing to work the ball forward from the back. The only other players in our squad that I think have that ability are Grant and Randell.
