I like the shade we have, but even I recognise that if/when we go lighter at home it should be for a considerable period. Ian bangs the drum for branding being a dirty word but an established identity, across all media and visual representations is important.
But at home we should have a clear identity, have a shade and stick to it, no flitting about.
I see where you're coming from, but the established and clear identity is
GREEN. Are you seriously saying that we have a consistent identity in the last few seasons, with white stripes, shorts, sashes and god knows what else diluting the already dark green each year?
All of those kits have met the same responses from non-Argyle supporting friends... 'is that even green?'... 'why is it so dark?'... 'is that the away shirt?'.
It makes sense to change up the shade for aesthetic reasons, and it makes sense for financial reasons. People are far more likely to buy a shirt that offers something different from the previous year, especially with the annual change.
What do you think of the St Etienne shirts changing shade? Have they got it all wrong? Those shirts look a hell of a lot better than ours, and a hell of a lot more green.
We agree on many things Biggs, this one we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.
Designs have to change (stripes etc.). I wish they didn't, I would like entire consistency. But I have had to grudgingly concede that commercialism is key in this grubby modern world we now occupy, the club needs constant difference or we'd all make our shirts last years and not rotate them. You don't, but I do feel there should be a consistent thread (pun intended) across all the home shirt derivatives, and if designs must change then that must be our colours, green black and white.
Black is black, it can't change. Likewise white is white and always will be. Green provides an option to vary but in so doing you massively change the ensemble look of the three colours combined. With all the design differences each season if you fart about constantly with the green it's Argyleness is farted about too, the wider football world won't recognise it as intrinsically Plymouth Argyle without having to look closer for the badge or the sponsor.
What you might gain in aesthetics (debatable) you loose in consistency of identity.
Tell your friends that it *IS* green, it's dark because that is the club's chosen (and like it or lump it established) brand identifier, and no, it's not the away kit (then feel free to give them a comedy slap round the back of the head for asking stupid questions...I would
St Etienne have diluted their brand by diluting their colour, they will have to keep that for 5-10 years before it will become recognisably St Etienne again. Yes, they have got it wrong and no, i don't like it. That shade looks like the kind of colour mould goes on bread after it's turned from blue.
I have responded to your questions, not out of belief I can change your mind, any more than you might think you can change mine. As I say I have noticed that we agree on many things Argyle, but this is my area of particular pitchforkery - identity. And identity is all about consistency, not flittery.
Have a good game tonight
