Set pieces

I have often raised our set piece inadequacies including at q & a with $$. Keep getting told teams don't score that often from set pieces. Feature on match of the day at the weekend showed how often Premier League teams score from them. Arsenal top with 22. Where would they be without them? I only remember us scoring from 2 corners one a flukey o.g. and possibly 1 free kick. Now we are struggling for goals it would have made a massive difference to be more productive. What do they do in training ? We must have had hundreds of corners this season. Every time an attack fizzles out and we get a corner you know what's going to happen. Absolutely no point in us getting a corner. Rant over

After watching our disgraceful back post corners, which failed, every single time, against Milwall. I can say that the sooner we get our set pieces together. The better. If teams aren't scoring that much from set pieces any more, as you quoted, surely its time a manager caught out every other team by working on them?

Exactly, Manchester City have a coach apparently who is in place purely as a free kick /dead ball specialist. Cricky moses, it always staggers me that players on the pitch can't actually see what isn't working and change accordingly. They have to receive instructions from the bench as was evidently obvious at Millwall the weekend. Good grief it really frustrates me the lack of reaction and intelligence sometimes on the actual field of play.

The teams that have ( good) set piece coaches are certainly reaping the benefits - even in the championship.
I don't know how much an experienced one costs but they add points.
We have long been woeful in that area. When you see a well worked set play leading to a goal it can be a beautiful on the eye too.
Ipswich identified how rubbish they were at set pieces about 18 months ago and dramatically improved.
Norwich's goals from corners this season have been amazing.
Derby & Portsmouth have scored lots of set piece goals to get promoted.
We have conceded 13 set piece goals this season.

Wasn't our assistant coach Simon Ireland meant to be a set-piece 'expert' , specialist having previously fulfilled that role
this season at Sheffield Wednesday and then at Huddersfield ?

I agree, it's painful. It's hard to really see a routine either on most of them, we lack someone who can deliver well and we don't attack the ball well enough which when you think we play with 3 centre backs is scandalous really.
I just don't get it. If you see alot of set piece goals, they are very simple, a good ball in, effective movement, strategic blocks and someone attacking the ball.

Norwich have a set piece specialist & it is certainly paying dividends for them

i name our corners as technical goal kicks,i also cannot understand why they are so bad at set pieces.

Occasionally we get a glimpse of a planned dead ball move but our lack of a semblance of evolving ideas has been very disappointing. And donā€™t get me started on our pathetic throw ins!

I remember an interview with Paul Wotton where he said that Sturrock would have the players practice set pieces over and over again, to the point of boredom. I think I heard Martin Gritton say something similar. However, the numbers of goals scored/conceded from set pieces under Sturrock shows that this approach works.
Unfortunately we donā€™t have a person with Sturrockā€™s experience and track record in charge at the moment!

Earlier in the season I seem to remember that we had a few corner routines, granted we didn't score from any but at least we often created some sort of a chance. Randells overhit floated corners to the Millwall RB on Saturday was truly baffling, no threat at all. Terrible..

The last time I remember us trying something different from a corner as Swansea away and look what happened, we scored.
