When we start with a defence that shipped was it 80 goals last season & the central defenders on 2 year contracts thanks to Adams what can we expect.
Totally unacceptable. It was obvious at the start of the season that the defence would still be substandard. But this fabulous attacking football we were promised is really yet to materialise.
An unbelievably frustrating game to be at. Had plenty of the ball, we stretched them for long spells yet we couldnt make the keeper work, then we were punished by our usual bit of shoddy defending & we didn’t recover. You feel like we’re so close, and yet so far as well.
Given the philosophy of passing and attacking football that we have adopted (and I support it) with a three-man defense, conceding these type of goals is the price that is paid. We, however, need to score more. The challenge is that many of our players are not yet on the same wavelength the way Mayor and McFadzean are.We see a lot of passes that are not quite accurate enough when going forward and lots of players who are not instinctively running to receive passes or passing where the runner is going. It certainly takes time to develop such an understanding. In the meantime, every other team knows our philosophy and our approach and set out their store to nullify us and score on set set pieces, long balls, and breakaways. As every member of the team syncs with each other and with what the manager wants, we can expect to see this type of outcome. I do not expect (and do not want) Lowe to change his philosophy or style. In the meantime scapegoating the defense is an easy way to vent while ignoring the big picture.
We badly need consistency in the striker roles. It really can't help when we're rotating our forwards every week - have we played the same front two in consecutive games yet? Injuries haven't helped obviously, but we really need a run with the same pair up top.
Away form is becoming a big concern. Three defeats on the bounce and no goals scored. Fully fit squad now, so we will see what Lowe does about it. Two shots on target the whole game tells it’s own story. Chance to put things right on Tuesday night before returning home. Have every faith in Lowe. It’s still very early days and we need to keep plugging away.
