Fantastic from Root and Brook.

The way back in for Bairstow could be to replace Crawley, he has opened for England in other formats and the way England play in Tests with the traditional and accumulating way an opener used to play long gone there could be an 'opening' for Bairstow in the Ashes.

Watched until lunch it was good to see Root playing more reserved cricket, he doesn't need to try to score quick just let the others do that. Especially when you have the talent of Brooks batting with you. Root is a great player when he plays in his own style.

Brook is currently averaging over 100 in tests. I know its only his 7th game but that's ridiculous. 807 runs so far, the record for fastest to 1000 is 12 innings so he's got the rest of this innings, 2nd innings here and 1st innings against Ireland to score another 193 to break that record.

Amazing by Brook but he's new. Let's see if bowlers will eventually work out his weaknesses. Everybody has them.

Interesting idea. It feels a bit like a square peg in a round hole, but as you say he has prospered as an opener in white-ball cricket. I'm surprised he hasn't been tried as an opener in Tests given how many players have had an unsuccessful stint there.

I wonder whether Crawley's best position is down the order ultimately. I wouldn't want to bowl at him if he came in at 200/3 or whatever, but he seems to be such a cheap wicket for fresh bowlers with a new ball.

I'd like to see Crawley given some time out of the firing line. Have a rest after this series then if he scores plenty of runs in the forthcoming County Cricket season then I'd be happy for him to come back. There is some talent there but right now any decent bowler has worked him out.

For now I'd be keen for Bairstow to have a go with opening. His form was so good last year it's not fair to leave him out.
