Replacing Fox with Jones and disrupting both midfield and defence was a poor, poor substitution in my opinion.
And people think Derek Adams doesn’t have a negative mindset as manager.
Wow, 4 centre halves. One that he put into midfield.
Adams doesn’t believe in keeping the ball. He rather put an extra defender back there, who looked totally out of place and didn’t seem to know what to do. If you keep the ball, the opposition haven’t got it. Meaning they can’t score. Instead, we sit deeper and deeper and let them have the ball. The best bit of all this is that there is no pressure (yet again) on the person crossing the ball. Why have that many behind the ball if you aren’t going to close down people on the edge of the box.
Without doubt after the first goal we lost complete impetus. We just sat deeper and deeper and just lost any momentum of being one goal up. It’s the mindset of the manager, which feeds into the players and our tactic is never to look to score more goals but to hold onto what we have.
Anyhow, credit must go to Macey. Fabulous first half save just before the half time whistle. The two goals he could do nothing about.
The first half was fairly even. Argyle had the better first part and Rovers grew into it more and became more assured. We looked dangerous at times without testing the keeper. Rovers looked useful from crosses (it’s amazing if you get bodies in the box from open play) but it was a corner and a free header that was there other great chance of the half.
Lameiras was terrific for Argyle. He worked tiressless and was that spark on the ball which you felt would open them up for us. Everything we did well, came through him. The problem is our midfield. Not only is it “one-paced” with Ness, Sarcevic and Fox. It also is a midfield that isn’t going to provide a real goal threat. By which l mean it actually isn’t looking like scoring a goal.
Sarcevic was awful today. He gave up possession so much and gave away stupid fouls.
I did think Riley was good, and it was his great ball that flashed across the box with Ladapo not anticipating the cross.
Second half after the cracking goal from Lameiras, Argyle just sat deeper and deeper. Can you imagine how Barnsley and Charlton players will be relishing that time and space on the ball if these are the tactics we continue to adopt.
I just simply despair that we don’t have any other tactics that to cling on. The only good thing about Argyle is hoping to see a piece of Lameiras or Carey magic. It sure isn’t because we play good football because good teams don’t give away the ball as much, or as easily, as we do. You only have to watch this team and see why we struggle away from home. If it wasn’t for the generosity of the Rovers defender l honestly don’t know how we would of scored again.
Adams has it in his head that if you take the lead sitting back is the right tactics to play. Except nobody has seemingly told him that the way we defend, with no pressure on the ball carrier, is an atrocious way of defending.
The lightbulb joke should be replaced. It’s not how many people you need to change a lightbulb? It’s how many centre backs Adams needs on a football pitch to not concede a goal? (And yes it’s not funny, there is no humour in watching Adams defensive substitutions).
