And didn't England also drop points against Wales in that qualifying tournament, when there were only countries in the group?
Yes, England could only draw with Wales at Wembley, in fact. I recall the press taking the pee out of Tomaszewski, the Polish keeper, before the match and, of course he played a blinder. England ended throwing half a dozen strikers on and they all fluffed their lines.

They’ve had some very good managers.

Jose Mourinho is one of the greatest of all time, Louis Van Gaal has had a brilliant career, whereas David Moyes was on a hiding to nothing after taking over from Sir Alex.

Man Utd have suffered from a lack of strategy and poor recruitment.
Mourinho was already past his sell-by date by then and has never shown faith in younger players.

wasn't that Brian Clough who called him a clown

I think Southgate is tactically lacking when it comes to outsmarting the big boys but I think he’s a great man manager , the players seem to love playing for him and he’s done very well at getting the media on side .
People saying he’s got the best group of players ever are wide of the mark for me ..Sven had seamon..Neville..Ferdinand..Terry..Cole.
Beckham..lampard..gerrard..scholes..
Rooney and Owen …the only current players that would get in that side for me are Kane, walker and Bellingham.

we’ve never managed to beat a big nation in a knock out game outside of England in our history which is an unbelievable stat and suggests a winning mentality is where our problems lie

I would suggest a lack of quality/technique rather than winning mentality. Especially re penalties !
And I agree Sven was a terrible manager.

Was unthinkable for England not to qualify having won the wc 2 tournaments previously and 1/4 in 1970. We had some good players then too. Colin Bell, Tony Currie etc. Think the real damage done was losing in Poland.
Course there were only 16 qualifiers. I was heartbroken and refused to go to school next day. Got dragged in anyway

Yes, I think you're right, but the press latched onto it before and certainly after the match to mock Clough.
Clough .. a genius.
Watching this cracked me up and strongly hints at why he , sadly, never got the England job. He said exactly what he thought ! He is the polar opposite to boring in this interview with Brian Moore

Southgate and Foster lie at the other end of the spectrum - on and off the field. That's not hugely knocking Southgate & Foster , who no doubt have their own strengths, but Clough was something else. How on earth have Forest got two stars above their crest and how were Derby top of the pile ? He believed in attractive football too.

A genius indeed. A flawed one, but a genius nonetheless.

My interest in football started at age six when I saw Argyle fans leaving Central Park wearing green white and black rosettes.

My love of football is largely down to Brian Clough. He told it like it was - no bull. That’s why he didn’t get the England job.

Maybe both BG. The Argies in football and Springboks in rugby regularly display winning mentalities. They seem to be able to find a way to win even in great adversity and when they don't have the greatest squads. Both are capable of the pretty stuff, but also capable of being pretty ugly. Huge passion and hunger to win from the players and their countries urging them on. Our national character seems weaker than when I was a nipper.
They prefer to win when it counts, rather than count wins.

A question for someone who remembers, as I was born in the mid seventies. Why do you think we did so badly in that decade when we were so strong in club European football? Looking at the squads we didn't look weak. Freak circumstances?

The frustrating thing for me is English players over the years have always had the quality and technique in the premier league and champions league, but in most cases can’t replicate that in an England shirt..beckham could for instance, but gerrard , lampard and scholes couldnt..of our current crop, Kane , saka and Bellingham can and Phil foden can’t …he looks one of the best players in the world at city, but can’t remember him having a good game for England…frustrates the hell out of me

Lampard rarely played well for England. Scholes did at times, but was often played out wide, which did not suit him at all

I share your pain, Deacster.

Rather predictably - in view of the opposition - I just couldn't get the repetitive ear worm, 🎶'It's just like watching Brazil...'🎶 out of my head.

'Mesmerised' by the England performance, however, it gradually morphed into, 🎶 It's just like watching Ar-gyle..' 🎶 - and the bleddy thing was still going round my noggin as I was trying to get to sleep!
It's the Elite level 😉
