It'll be interesting if the scheduling of the world cup forces games to go ahead this weekend, not sure where they'll fit an extra round or two of games in!

No way this should influence the thinking, a monarch that has reigned for 70yrs is way above a football match.
Plenty of time after the world Cup

If the timing of the World Cup is a factor given the ludicrous choice of venue it will say it all about the values driving the modern game.

All Northern Ireland fixtures are off this weekend - source BBC.

It could be that Northern Ireland is a slightly different proposition, given the more charged status of concepts of Britishness and the monarchy.

Could be wrong, we shall see.

I live in a divided house....my wife is watching wall to wall mourning, and thinks anything frivolous like sport should be postponed.

I think we have lost a huge presence who epitomised service and devotion but who can be mourned respectfully without abandoning every aspect of everyday life. I work from home and am at my desk....although clearly not working (yet).

Some incongruences have already emerged....should Saturdays league games be cancelled....when games the evening the news broke went ahead? And if Saturday games are cancelled what about Tuesday/Wednesday? Or the following Saturday? The only precedent we have was George VI where games were played with the singing of the National Anthem and Abide with Me. Rugby and Hockey matches were not however played.

On a personal note if Tuesday goes ahead do I publish a One Game at a TIme for it....

Unions are cancelling strikes as a mark of respect.

If sports events are cancelled, why not theatres who are simply dimming the lights, playing the National Anthem and opening books of condolence.

The BBC is apparently not showing any comedy programmes until the funeral has taken place.....will ITV also do similar....what about Dave? And does that mean when a semblence of normal programming returns we cannot watch Only Fools and Horses but we can for example watch a series or film about a serial killer (there is bound to be one). Channel 4 have cancelled Naked Attraction ( sadly just this week and not for ever but its a start).

I think ( and I am not attempting to be controversial here) if anyone epitomised getting on with life it was the Queen. Thousands of West Ham, fans spontaneously singing the National Anthem to my mind said more about their respect and feelings of loss than not turning up and sitting listening to Nicholas Witchell ( who our new King loathes with a passion).

Feel free to disagree, but I am simply expressing an opinion here, not attempting to start a debate, If the games are cancelled sobeit. If they are played I would expect fans without exception to honour her memory impeccably.

Some good opinions on here. I think the fixtures will go ahead - more about money than anything else. I wish they'd hurry up though - I was going to head down to Plymouth after lunch.

I agree with the money side, after covid lockdowns I think thats the way they will go.

Also just been told tickets to the service at St Paul's are on sale for the 1st 2000. A bit cheeky if true!

Play the game. Show respect with a minutes silence and national anthem.
Just like the game was played after the dreadful Keyham incident and the game was played in Liverpool in the wake of the very genuine tragedy of a young girl having her whole life snuffed out.
If people wish to mourn privately that's their choice. In reality if the game is postponed people will simply do something else like go to the pub where there will be no minutes reflection.
