Pick your starting 11 for the first game of the season. (you can return to the poll to change your vote).

A stark reminder of how few realistic options we have.

Really can't understand how we've got to 10 days before season starts with such a threadbare squad.

Bizarre.

The team picks itself really, apart from the left side centre-back and the two strikers. There's not enough options within the squad, a good starting 11 and then we're struggling.

It's when you start picking the bench that you see how threadbare we are.

Burton/McCormick, Galloway/Gillesphey, Law, Randell, one of Ennis/Jephcott/Hardie, Shirley, Tomlinson.

With G Cooper and Bolton not likely to return imminently, a couple of early injuries would leave us looking decimated.

I'm not quite sure what's happened with recruitment. Lowe brought in his recruits to the defensive half of the team in good time, then everything suddenly stopped. The attacking squad remains unstrengthened at this worryingly late stage. Is this a shortage of money? The reasoning now is that we may have to wait until late August to loan players that clubs decide they don't need. I sense that the situation is far from ideal.

I normally veer towards over-optimism, but at the moment I'm struggling to see how we stay competitive.

Imagine if there's a covid situation, similar to the England squad in the Euros. 2 or 3 first team players needing to self-isolate.

And then, a first teamer or two pick up knocks in one of the early matches (often happens).. all of sudden we've got a bunch of youth players having to make the step up, or we're rushing to make loan signings, pre-season prep out the window, as there's no time to integrate them..

Why are we taking that risk? Just feels like naive management.

I put a question to the fans forum about getting players vaccinated. Wasn't asked. You are right Justin there's not much cover. Probably the usual problem of getting players to come down and Lowe not wanting to sign lesser players. We have 3 strikers only 1 I rate.

L.ooking at the results after 40 votes, it is staggering how little competition for places there is. 8 players receive 90+% votes, 10 receive 80%+. Only at LCB do the fans see any real competition. That's not healthy.

I agree with Justin that even a minor Covid scare would leave us in a right mess.

Has been mentioned above - is it a lack of money that is stopping us from signing new players?
The unexpected £2m insurance payout would obviously cover debts and costs of running the club but surely some of it would be spent on the playing budget, although we don't know if we received the £2m in a lump sum or installments.

Also, usually before a season starts Lowe has signed at least 2 loan players with more added on deadline day.
Hopefully we'll have reinforcements next week although I'd doubt that they would start against Rotherham.

Having Neil Dewsnip, who is crucial to recruitment, away in Tokyo probably isn't helping.

We still got George Cooper who might make it to the match day squad for the Rotherham game, James Bolton too and Lowe has said he wants to bring 2 players in before the window closes.

Cooper's apparently nowhere near, and Bolton saw a specialist last week which suggests that his recovery is not progressing as planned.

Currently a first team squad of 20, with 3 goalkeepers and 2 out injured. So we have 17 pros for 18 places.

We need another striker for sure but so does many teams! They don’t grow on trees! I also thought many many supporters wanted to give youth a chance! Can’t sign another 3 or 4 on loan and give our youth a chance! Make your minds up! I think a lot of people would do just as Lowe doesn’t want to do and that’s get players in for the sake of it just to boost numbers! It’s not an easy task to get the players in given budget and location! Compared to top teams in this league!

What we would like & who RL gets are 2 different things- he has even said he will not get a player for the sake of it - you only need to look at the recruitment last season to see where it went wrong

Yes we see other teams in the league signing numerous players but we have what we have & no doubt RL has missed out on targets but he carries on with his target list & hopefully he will get one or two on that list

Signing numerous players does not guarantee success- why do you think he is playing our youngsters in pre season because he knows our youngsters will be in the 1st team during the season

We should be proud that so many of our youngsters are in & around the 1st team- as RL said why should i be offered premier league kids on loan when i have our youngsters coming through

I would like whoever comes through the door next to be under the age of 30 & have lower league experience so we have a mixture of youth & maturity

This is what working to a budget gets you....... a lot of players for every position, or you can have more experience/ quality........ you can't have both. Unless you are a billionaire willing to throw away money.
