Our batting line up was fragile as it is but add into it no preparation before this test then always going to be a struggle.
Apart from Root, we simply don’t have another top order batsman we can rely on. You can’t build a successful team on the consistency of one batsman.
Can’t remember the last time we had 3 world class batsman in the team. Maybe the days of Cook & Trott.

With these conditions and a pretty green wicket I’m surprised at bowling selection and choosing to bat.
147. I mean l know it was difficult conditions but you only have to see Rory Burns leg side dismissal to see where we are as a team.

Can understand the logic that Anderson and Broad need their game time managed, but, surely the 1st Test is pivotal.
If we weren't on the back foot already after so little game time before the series started, we are almost certainly 1 down now after just a day's play.
Having Anderson and Broad play in the 2nd test will be too late now and won't solve our weak batting line up which the Aussies will exploit ruthlessly.

I'm surprised anybody thought it would be anything other than a whitewash! Today's players are so used to trying to get 200 in 20 overs of some other game that looks a bit like cricket that none of them has any idea how to do a Boycott and stay in until the ball and bowlers get tired.
