FA cup 1st round (home to Stevenage)

Agreed. The FA Cup should be the definition of competitive football and a highlight of any fan’s season—the Argyle fans and the Stevenage fans deserve to see Argyle put out a full strength side. The league is obviously important for a team like ours, but the league has never been everything to any English football team. While the logic of using the next two cup games as partial rest games for key players is sound, the FA Cup is a competition in which we should be looking to progress. Think what the greater benefits could be to the club, for instance, if we got a series of soft draws that took us as far as the fifth round. Sure—there are many better teams than Argyle that will be in the hat for Round 2, but there will be some beatable opponents too, and only one team can finish the tournament unbeaten.

Consider what might have happened next if Jervis’s late late effort at Anfield had gone in off the post; look at how far some small teams can get every now and again with favourable draws; and think back to our last good cup run in the league cup—that was great, wasn’t it, even if we did come up short against Watford yet again.
