1) No Cole was the first big surprise. Bhasera for Hemmings not so much so after the latter's performance at Hereford. Half expected Wotton or Walton to make way for Hourihane or Tsoumou or Fletcher for Chadders. Strange little incident 15 before kick-off when Nancekivell called everyone training together - chat lasted less than a minute and afterwards the body language was less than good! Walton and Fletch S particularly looked unimpressed.

2) Argyle started positively. An early Wotton free-kick going for a corner which was then headed wide by Blanchard. MacDonald did well down the right and his lob (cross?) beat everyone and dropped into the far corner from a narrow angle.

3) Usual confusion at the back. Waton gave Bhasera a terrible ball then Bhasera gave the ball away. It took a dive by Wotton in front of the shot to block it. Later a series of free-kicks and corners were unconvincingly cleared. After scoring Argyle seemed to lose composure, Walton and Wotton again not really working as a pair.

4) Aldershot's first shot on target followed Bhasera being caught in posession and a lobbed free-kick. Fantastic save to his left by Larrieu. Argyle survived but no clearances were sticking and Argyle seemed to need someone to put their foot on the ball and pick a pass or the front-two to hold the ball-up.

5) MacDonald tried to reprise his AFC Wimbledon goal kick-off but ran into trouble. Wotton won a free-kick which Williams put into the side netting. Then at the other end Larrieu gave a short goal-kick to Williams who dithered and got caught. Larrieu made the save. Argyle went too deep and the same ball retention issues of the first-half surfaced.

6) Aldershot began to press. One free-kick was wasted when Walton cleared then a firm challenge by Purse was harshly punished. Luckily Aldershot couldn't finish Larrieu's weak parry. In the midst of the free-kicks Tsoumou replaced Chadders. Tsomou had similar problems but his pace looked more dangerous until he slowed up late on due to injury.

7) Larrieu fumbled a through ball and then tried to recover and almost brought the forward down. The ref didn't give it and Purse tidied up. Second-half littered with needless free-kicks - Aldershot twice had the ball in the net but were both called off-side. Then they hit the post.

8 ) Argyle finally given a free-kick, floated in by Wotton, cleared but returned by Berry - Bhasera off-side. Argyle far too deep defending and balls cleared had no outlet. A long period of pressure ended tamely (thankfully). Aldershot were soon back on it and Hourihane replaced MacDonald at an Aldershot corner. Bit like the Alamo at the end.

9) Steve Fletcher replaced Feeney who had yet another good game. MacDonald and Purse had good games but it was Blanchard (again) who stood out for me. Larrieu - cracking saves poor kicks and the usual howler or 2. Midfield has to change.

10) Referee very inconsistent. Booked an Aldershot player for pulling Feeney back then Williams for a dangerous challenge. In the second Feeney was booked for a late challenge but I thought the ref missed a foul on Feeney just before that. He later booked Wotton for persistent fouling. Gave a free-kick against Bhasera when a penalty for him would have been a more understandable decision. Bhasera incensed, hurried into a challenge and correctly booked.

11) Estimates of the crowd over 10,000 were shown to be well wide of the mark. The Aldhershot fans tried hard to make their numbers look fewer by spreading out across the Barn Park but to be fair they were among the noisiest at Home Park this season. Argyle crowd patchy in noise. Very loud at the end. Vital 3 points.

I'll still be uneasy until it's mathematical, but what a result! Players must keep their focus and not get complacent, stranger things will have happened and we've been riding our luck a bit of late.

Thought we needed to be a minimum of 4 points clear of drop zone with 4 games to go so delighted to be 8.

Its all about results at this stage of the season and todays was just what we needed. Rather be in our position than that of ECFC.

Bring on the derby game again

Thanks Mark, I couldn't get to the game today and it sounds like we were under the hammer a bit. Still, a great 3 points and we're almost there. Well done Fletch and the boys, I can almost taste that champagne.

Lets be honest hasn't worked all season, only one that thinks it has seems to be Fletcher as he keeps picking them

Walton and Wotton work as a better pair than Hourihane and Walton/Wotton. Blanchard, signed with his primary position as DM has settled right into centre back, and Fletch obviously thinks that Young is too lightweight for a CM spot, so we're short of options.

Think the WW combination is ideal for a relegation battle, and you can't dispute the results.

That just about does it!

At this stage of the season points are more important than performances and this is what we got today against Aldershot.

We didn't attack much and sat back on the slender one goal lead but football isn't just about attacking; it's also about defending well and today we gave a masterclass in defending.
It's not pretty and we rode our luck at times and, given results elsewhere, it's job done.

Larrieu replaced Cole who must have picked up an injury and Young was once again dumped after being in the squad.

The swirling wind and driving rain were awful conditions to play football in and it was Aldershot who adapted the better.
We couldn't get hold of the ball and I doubt if any Argyle player had the ball under control for more than five seconds throughout the entire game.

Our first (and only?) attack ended with the ball in the net when MacDonald turned the full-back inside out and hit a cross that deflected off the defender and looped into the net.

Would we push on and make the game safe? No, we invited Aldershot onto us and had to rely on some good defending and excellent goalkeeping to keep the score intact.

Larrieu's goal led a charmed life for all of the second half with the wind, rain and Aldershot all doing their best to break through but Larrieu and his defenders held firm.
Special mention to Wotton and Walton who just couldn't get their foot on the ball but did the dirty work and protected the back four.

It was tight at the end but we did it!

The back five plus Wotton, Walton and Bhasera all played well, it was upfront were we struggled. Chadwick is off form and the ball didn't stick, which left Feeney to battle away almost on his own.
Tsoumou came on and was the Tsoumou pre-Bradford rather than the confident player during that game against the Bantams.
Steve Fletcher once again played more in our penalty box than the Aldershot penalty area.

A huge win due to the battling and defensive qualities of the players.

Back from the dead twice in the same season!!

Awful game, great result.

Thought Walton was the only one who wanted to get his foot on the ball and pick a pass - something he gets unfairly derided for at times in amongst the hoofball. Some heroic defending with a mixture of great saves and really dodgy keeping from Larrieu. Purse MoM for me again with his organisation of a fully stretched back ten (!).

Should be safe now and can't complain, but let's hope the entertainment and the comfort factor improves next season.

It was all about character today in the full face of the elements and the team delivered. I think it is now 6 goals conceded in 13 games which has underpinned our march towards survival.

The midfield can't keep control of the ball and look very flustered with it, hence why we always seem to invite pressure on to us. Today I thought Wotton was poor, lost count of the times that he gave the ball away in the middle of the park (usually it's Walton).

It was obvious the wind was going to be a big factor today, cant understand why we didn't start Fletcher up front to put Aldershot under more pressure in the first half. If it wasn't for a great save in the first half and little bit of luck in the second (off the post, then Larrieu's head for a corner) things would have been a lot different.

Nonetheless a great result today, especially so with Maccs and Hereford losing!
