Further to my original thought, maybe leaving the club freed the salary from the day to day costs and helped somewhat to keep us going.
During those times every bit helped in some way, like it or not.

Correct.

He did applaud (from half way line) the fans at end of game and some applauded him. It was suggested by one of our players that he venture down with the team to the away end but he politely refused.
