Ryan Broom - £500k fee

Not being party to the finances/wage structure it is hard to assess whether 500,000 is "silly money" or not. For our recent history it is clearly a lot of money and you do have to factor in cost of wages and impact upon wage structure ie other players wanting more when they see new signings coming in on higher wages.

However for me the impact of this thread is to bring back memories of when we were in the Championship last time. We were out of our league financially. If we are talking about promotion this season then the question of becoming a "sustainable Championship club" and what this means will have to be wrestled with and I think that along the way we will have to come to terms with the fact that 500,000 is not "big money".

I am going to trust Simon Hallett to make the make the right call. That way I don't have to think about how we actually achieve that "sustainable Championship Club" thing because it gives me a headache (it's been a long day).

I would be gutted if we spent £500k on any player right now and that includes Ryan Broom. That is too much money for a club our size and one that aims to be sustainable. If it turns out that we didn’t sign Broom permanently and Argyle said it was because we weren’t prepared to pay Peterborough’s valuation then I will be happy that we are truly trying to run our club well and within our means.

Even if we could afford it?

We didn't know what the club paid for Cooper, Ennis or Hardie, I'm sure the fees were undisclosed but for all we know the club could have paid close to £500k for one of them or for all three combined.

We only know the potential Broom transfer fee because MacAnthony has blabbed it.
The fee, if we want him, will probably be less than £200k plus clauses and add-ons.

So why don't we know the transfer fees? Goes against the grain of so called transparency.

Maybe, a group of wealthy supporters would sponsor the fee
I just wish I could help.
If that were to happen, and it's obviously very unlikely, doesn't that blur the concept of the club being sustainable - the key Hallett target? If we reach the Championship, we have to face the fact that we won't be able to "gamble" fees that are large to us, though relatively small by the standards of that league. Unless perhaps if we have sold "one of our own".

I'd be interested to know SH's reaction, if such an offer was made.

A player comes in on loan, fits in and gives good performances. That's a managerial success. However buying that player is neither essential or necessary unless it makes financial sense in terms of their being available free or cheaply, or offering potential to be developed and sold on at a significant profit. I like Ryan Broom but unless he can be obtained for a sensible sum ( certainly not hundreds of thousands) I think the Club will let things take their own course.
