How thoroughly depressing, and entirely inevitable.

A World Cup in Australia would have been brilliant as well, but it never would have been allowed to happen, obviously.

Just out of curiosity (and ignorance): what do the European and South American nations, for instance, gain from being part of FIFA? As far as I can tell FIFA's only real job is to organise the World Cup and the Club World Cup (or whatever that's called these days). The commercial value of both would be massively reduced if UEFA and Conmebol were to pull out. Given FIFA's well-documented history of corruption and inflated self-importance, what would happen if a breakaway organising body were formed?

This will be a 48 team tournament too. They'll have a lot of stadiums etc to build, reckon they'll be able to afford it?

Didn't FIFA recently say that these 48 team tournaments will be too big to hold in 1 country?

Look at Platini, UEFA can be just as bad as FIFA.
The Champions League and European Championships have been needlessly expanded in the name of making more money.

They're all cut from the same cloth, hence why they all associate with each other.

Dunno, but I wonder how that would pan out with the IFAB? They oversee the rules of the game world-wide, so if (say) UEFA pulled out of FIFA, then they could ... could ... introduce rules out of step with the rest of the world (hypothetically). Well, all except for England and the other Home Nations who have permanent seats at the IFAB high table along with FIFA.

Interestingly, as the 2030 world cup is in 6 countries across Europe, Africa and South America, countries in those continents couldn't bid for the 2034 tournament - wonder if that had anything to do with that weird awarding process! Apparently the Saudi bid for 2034 came in 10 minutes after the 2030 hosts were announced.

North America were ruled out due to hosting it in 2026 so it only left Asia/Oceania as places that could bid. No point going up against Saudi though.

That would be quite some dismemberment.

Depressing and inevitable. If you have a spare half hour, then have a squizz at what the excellent YouTube analyst Alfie Potts Hamer has to say about Saudi Arabia and FIFA’s corrupt behaviour in this award. https://youtu.be/ZT-VVNEBm9o?si=Qk8av4R57cqpFok2

We've been in these waters before. We rarely learn from history.
Fascinating read . Interestingly those with the understanding back then , who spoke out and were arrested were left wing working class and friendly to Jews. Those three things rarely occur together today.
Is a Saudi WC in any way similar to Hitlers Olympics when he burnt as Jesse Owens won the 100m ? Ronaldo just avoided arrest for making the sign of the cross in August and another Colombian player was arrested a few years back for having a tattoo of Jesus' face. In fairness the Crown Prince of Saudi does have a vision 2030 where he hopes to build an expression of Islam that has values of ' moderation and tolerance'. We shall see.
What we do know is that FIFA is corrupt to the core and completely hypocritical in its claim to endorse human rights and equality etc.
