Why water the pitch?

Just seen some of the photos on the usual matchday thread to see PV are watering the pitch.

I am always amazed that clubs including Argyle do that.

It p**sed down yesterday but clubs persist in watering, even at half-time. With parts of the country under hosepipe bans it is stupid.

On the Argyle podcast, this is all explained by the head groundsman... something to do with cooling the surface down.

Makes the ball zip across the grass more.

Most clubs collect rainwater now and will pay through the roof for water company provision

Still don't see the need immediately before each half - do it in the morning FFS!

A softer surface can also reduce injuries.

Watering at half time keeps the whole pitch moist..

The modern pitches drain exceptionally well. If you don't water them they quickly get dry & sticky & will hinder passing football.

Looking at modern pitches compared to the sixties and seventies it obviously works.

Vale Park is also a very dry Pitch. Conversely, it also has very poor drainage:

Made me laugh when they wheeled out those water sprayers at half time...
