5 from me. Middle of the road performance, bit nit picky, quite indecisive at times but didn’t get much wrong.

Agree with ArgyleMatty in that he seemed to guess his way through most of the match. The pantomime of the free kick where Wigan players didn't retreat 10 yds and yet still seemed to get possession was embarrassing. Summed up by someone near me jokingly shouting, "Corner?" when the ball had gone out for a throw in.

Ball goes out of play, ref looks blankly at the Lino, Lino shrugs shoulders, ref gives throw to Wigan. Repeat to fade.

Both the ref and and his assistants guessed their way through most decisions.

Why did play go on after their player blocked a free kick about 1 yard from the ball in the first half?
He didn't block the ball. Houghton deliberately kicked it straight at him from 2 metres away. Houghton wanted a quick free kick and got it I reckon was the ref's reasoning. The ref was weak I thought, not as good as the Wycombe ref on Tuesday who got most things right.

It is something of a mystery that a small number of these 'usual suspects' continue year after year whilst poorly performing managers and players get sacked or don't get their contracts extended. While everyone is entitled to an off day, seeing the appointment of one of these officials induces dread and they generally do not fail to disappoint.

Woolmer was, is and always will be a poor referee. He clearly guessed several throw in / goal kick / corner decisions and as no help was forthcoming from his useless assistants, the decisions went Wigan’s way every time. 3/10
