Possession is not enough

Sure we had loads of possession during the first half against Chesterfield, but how many good chances did we create? Many of our shots were from outside the penalty area. Nearly all of our crosses were from deep - at least level with edge of the penalty area - so that defenders aren't turned and are very much in their comfort zones. Hardly anyone made it to the byline before crossing. How many runs off the ball (Frio style) were made by our midfielders? How many runs with the ball were made in their penalty area? We hardly ever break quickly - the only recent example was a few home games ago when, from near the halfway line, Feaney put Cowan-Hall (?) through to score.

In short, though we played most of the first half at Chesterfield's end of the pitch, how many times were they at all discomforted? Answer: hardly any.

OK a Suarez would have got a couple from the bits of chances that we did create, but we haven't got a Suarez. Our strikers need good chances.

A suarez probably would have got sent off for racial abuse before spitting on the opponents goalkeeper and being shot down by an invisible ghost further improving our disciplinary record

It wasn't just posession though on Saturday was it .
13 corners to 1
More shots on target and more shots off target .
Just need the instinctive finisher like a Marc Richards or a Jack Lester or even a Jamie Cureton .

Or Guy Madjo or Rhys Griffiths or Matt Lecointe. None prolific but none so wasteful either.

We did create a few more chances on Saturday compared to most other games but I don't recall their keeper actually having to make too many saves over the 90 minutes.

The corner count is meaningless as Chesterfield showed yet again, it's goals that count.

One of the problems with Argyle's present style of football is that it doesn't actually create many scoring chances because we don't get the ball in the box enough and when we do, we don't have enough bodies in there to get on the end of things.

A part of the problem of not scoring which is overlooked in our haste to blame Chadwick and Co. is the generally poor quality of the crossing, often hitting the first defender or being easily taken by the keeper.

When you create as few chances as Argyle do, you have to have a finisher who if he gets only a couple of chances all game, will usually take at least one of them.

Someone like a Tommy Tynan or perhaps a Jamie Cureton...

Mind you, it doesn't help either that according to Fletcher's broken record week after week, we are the unluckiest team in the history of football.

Agreed, but Saturday was very much the exception. Saturday we did turn possession into much more clear cut chances I agree but in the majority of games it has literally just been possession.

I'd say they're every bit as wasteful. Those 3 players have scored a combined 4 goals from open play in their time at the club. I think Madjo, Griffiths and Lecointe are all good secondary strikers with a goalscoring striker alongside them but none of those 3 provide goals. The only player we have at the club who even resembles a goalscoring striker is Paris Cowan-Hall and he plays out wide. Maybe Tyler Harvey too, he certainly is at youth team level but it's a step up.
