Just looking at Bairstow's batting over the last couple of weeks: 136, 172, 71no, 106, 112no... and then there was the 113 against the Aussies in January and 140 against the Windies in March: that's one hellva year for him.
He'll be licking his lips for the ODI's against India, he got 124 and 94 against them last year in India.

It's remarkable. I can't remember seeing a batter play with so much confidence in such a rich vein of form. Tucked into that sequence are the second and seventh fastest Test hundreds of all time AND that 71no would have been another 100 if New Zealand had given him a few more runs to chase down.

There have been a few times in this summer's games when I have thought that England should have been a bit more controlled but then they have just cracked on and blown the opposition away, e.g. Stokes chucked his wicket away in the first innings against India. In past years if an England player (a Botham or a Pieterson for example) had done that they would have been utterly berated for not controlling their attacking instincts, and I do wonder what might have happened if the gung ho tactics hadn't worked the first couple of times they tried it. But that didn't happen and now there is enough credit in the account to allow a few blips to occur without causing major alarms.

A good example of the new attacking mindset is that Broad was padded up last night as the night watchman with the instruction to tee off and attack.
Night watchmen are just not meant to do that.

It all looks great athe moment and I'm really enjoying it. But like The Doctor touches on, what happens when it all goes wrong and we're all out for 80. Will people remember the goods times.

It appears that whilst the Test team learnt lessons from the ODI team, the ODI team have learnt lessons from the pre McCullum test team.

After the exciting and entertaining Test cricket it's back to the drudgery of white ball cricket.
