Legia hooligans caused a lot of trouble against AZ Alkmaar earlier this season. AZ have a sizable hooligan element themselves who made themselves known when they played West Ham last season.
It almost seems that when these Polish headcases (to use your phrase!) face off against teams with a known historic or current hooligan element, they see it as a challenge to cause as much trouble as possible.
