We should have sold Whittaker (merged)

I find it quite ironic that fans (not just exclusive to Argyle) demand loyalty of players and managers and then threads like this appear when a player or manager goes through a bad patch.

Whether or not we see him for much longer he will bounce back. Hopefully this Saturday!
His regular scoring earlier in the season masked the fact that he was largely anonymous in games. Now his goals have dried up it is more apparent that Whittaker is not as good as some thought. It is almost like he sulks if things don’t go his way.

We should have bought John Aldridge when we had a chance who knows where we would have been.
A few years ago my pal and i got talking to Roy Carter at Whitsand bay golf club-Roy as you know was a very experienced midfielder who played over 500 games in the football league, quite a few of which were at Newport in the Tynan/Aldridge years. He told us that Len Ashurst, who was the Newport manager at the time, just could not believe that Argyle didn't sign them as a pair-Newport needed the money and the deal was all set up but apparently Moncur wanted to re sign Billy Rafferty instead and partner him with Tommy. Billy didn't return of course and i think the issue was a major factor in Bobby Moncur leaving the club-very costly error for him and Argyle.

Morgan has played every (or nearly every) minute of every game certainly since SS left. After the Millwall game I've began to think"won't run" is actually "can't run". He just seemed to really be struggling, no pace and limited mobility.... Now is that down to injury, fatigue or something else?

He is very similar to rashford in style. Some will see that as a positive and some not.

So what would we (hypothetically) spend £20 million on?

I’m guessing £5million would go into the wage structure over the next 2-3 years. £5 million into a ‘running cost’ budget for maintenance and £5 million into a player investment pool with the last £5 million going on black in grovsnor

Well just ignore the Swansea sell on then? 😳

By the way, we've as much chance of selling MW for £20m now as you have of not knee jerking Tuggers. 😉

Sell a player for 20m.... People aren't going to like it but surely a large % has to go upgrading the training facilities.

50% training facilities
25% playing budget
25% at a guess to Swansea.

The academy is sorted (financially speaking), revenues are growing.... Next step training facilities then player and manager budget and finally the stadium..... That the order I would do it anyway.

We are not going to get anything like £20m, that is as plain as a pikestaff - have you watched him play for the last 3 months?

Leaving that aside, if we get relegated, sure we can put some player transfer proceeds into facilities because we will have a revenue large enough (possibly one of the largest in the division) to allow us to have a competitive playing budget. But if we stay up we cannot repeat the mistake of last season. Unless there is new investment, any transfer fees in have to be ploughed back into the playing budget otherwise next season is going to be a disaster.

No way is Whittaker worth anything like £20 million. He never was and IMO we would now be fortunate to get what Lazio offered and was turned down.

I didn't say we would get 20m, just responding to the hypothetical question posed by tugboat.

I've no idea what we will get (or if he's going). What I do know is that the football world will value Morgan as the player he is and not just on form (be it good or bad). They won't think he's worth 20m on form and 5m out of form as is being suggested here. His value will be determined by which division we're in, how much he wants to push through a move and the number of clubs interested in him.

Fwiw, I believe 10-15m seems about right plus addons.... Depending on the buying club. Anything over that would show argyles ability to finally excel in negotiating. Anything less and it's same old argyle prices.

That's fine, but we wouldn't sell him in that case.
If Morgan wants to go he will go. If we get relegated I would say that is a certainty, he needs to be playing a higher level than league one at this stage of his career

If we don’t ,where is all the money for new players coming from?
Selling Whittaker for under £8.5m, with Swansea getting a cut too wouldn't bring in any money for new players. And certainly wouldn't bring in enough to be able to replace him.

If he wants to, sure. But if we stay up will he want to? Lots of people on here were saying in January that there was no chance we would keep him, at the time he made it very clear he didn't want to go. That may have changed, but I don't see much reason for it to have changed. As for his value, sure, he's had a barren spell. So did Viktor Gyokeres the season before last where he had a three month spell without a goal. After a summer break I'm expecting Morgan to be back even better next season. And with his stats if we do sell him (if still in the Championship) he shouldn't be going anywhere for anything less than £15m, and we probably could get more than that later in the window if he starts well and if clubs got desperate. If we go down we wouldn't get that, because the difference in transfer value if you go down is enormous, but if we did go down we'd still be able to hold out for a decent fee and be able to reinvest the money in improving the club (whether that be the team or off the field).

Available again, would probably fit our budget.

I think we would have done very well to have used any windfall productively given the nature of the Jan transfer market and our managerial appointment so I think it was the right decision to keep him; even if he has not/not been allowed to set the world alight since then.
