Couldn’t agree more MGM, great post. What I really like is the tactical evolution by Schuey. Loved the fact that sometimes the furthest forward runners in the box were the full backs, And then we even had Jephcott tracking back covering Edwards after one quick counter attack by City, smart alert play by Jephers. The midfielders were also popping up all over the pitch. I can’t remember our midfielders having so many shots in a game. Randell, Aziz, Butcher all had 2 or 3 shots each.

I felt there was very little difference in the quality of the sides and watching Argyle felt as close as I can remember to total football as it was so fluid and interchangeable. Won’t get carried away but what is good is is that it was a glimpse into Schuey’s tactical quality and also a good showcase Of a smart recruitment policy.

How many clubs are we fighting off from taking Jephcott away from Home Park....because he's a natural goal scorer......one , two, three....or none.......I think the answer has four letters in it and not three.

You could say that about any of our players. Jephcott and Hardie should be our main pairing up front. Jephcott is a natural finisher but is being played out of position.

Wouldn’t surprise me to see Jephcott on the bench for the majority of next season if we do get a decent striker in.

A large amount of Argyle fans stand at away matches. Why are you concerned about away fans at Home Park?

Did I mention anything about standing? 🤔 Dint I think I did

An enjoyable game. Stadium and pitch looking great.

Loved the new formation and how Azzaz gets so far forward- sometimes ahead of Hardie and Jephcott. Will get us a number of goals from that position.

Very impressed with Miller. A proper LWB who makes defenders blood curdle as he turns them one way and the other.

i like Butcher. Has a presence and worked well holding alongside Randell, who also had a good game.

Jephcott worked hard and looks a lot sharper than last season.

Defence were shaking and thier distribution wasn’t great at times. Cooper also was off with his distribution. Something to work on.

Halls looked capable when he came on. Looks like a proper no nonsense defender.

Great to see Pam come on- but he is a bit of a headless chicken at times and I am sure his head doesn’t know what his feet are doing most of the time.

All in all very promising and the squad now looks like it has the quality in depth that cost us last season.

Agree about Halls. Looked the part. In terms of squad depth, add another striker and I think our 2nd X1 could avoid relegation this season, and probably comfortably.

Randell was outstanding he is ready and will play at a higher level. Azaz looks excellent and will be a threat from midfield Butcher looks tidy to me and will be a challenge to Houghton for a start. Miller was busy and provided some decent crosses can he link with DM in the same way Conor does? Mumba a reasonable back up for Edwards and Ryan Hardie looks sharp. All in all very promising
I think its now a case of Danny Mayor having to link with Miller, not the other way around. Miller will definitely be the senior partner in that relationship. Indeed, that interpassing that went on between Mayor and Connor, needed to get Connor forward isn't needed with Miller. He just storms forward on his own. I'm not sure that if Miller and Azaz are fit, there will be room for Mayor (or Grant). Elsewhere I'd like to see Houghton paired with Randell instead of Butcher and Edwards in the role that Jephcott and then Camara played yesterday, allowing Mumba to play at RWB.

We really have a intelligent manager at the helm.

One of Schumacher’s quotes was.

“We looked a little bit sharper than them going forward, especially in the first half, and created some really good opportunities. We just didn’t have that ruthless edge that we would like, to make one of those chances count.”

l think people can see we look reasonably solid. And there are some nice interchanges in the middle of the park. It’s just about can we be more clinical.

After watching it, and now the highlights, you can see have a number of good shooting opportunities. Whilst we didn’t trouble their keep enough we had a number of shots, which is pleasing.

Another pleasing point was Jephcott’s performance. I thought he played this deeper role well. When City countered and Edwards was out of position he tracked back and covered. There were one or two nice exchanges too. He isn’t very physical, but he seems to have an eye for a pass. Could be interesting few months seeing how he develops in that position.

My one disappointment with today is the way we still lose concentration too easily. Similar to the Swansea match.I don’t think City troubled us too much but if you watch the highlights some of their best chances, and goal, come from us just being sloppy. In the first half Martin just heads over from a corner. Argyle try to take a quick short goal kick and lose the ball on the edge of the box. Fortunately, it hits Scarr and goes out for a corner. In the second half, Cooper comes out of the box and under no pressure plays a pass into centre circle but its not getting to Randell. Then one quick pass and there in on goal. Cooper makes up for mistake.

l know this is the way we play. We take risks. But sometimes the risks need better judgement calls on whether those risks are always worth taking in our own third of the pitch. I felt sorry for the young lad who gave it away to concede the goal. l look at where he was passing it to and think is there any benefit in passing it to another Argyle player under pressure deep in the corner. Sometimes l wish we just clear our lines.

lm enjoying the fluidity of our formation. I think it allows the wing backs to get further forward. It will mean the opposition will expose us down the sides but 3ATB will always give the opposition a opportunity to exploit the space.

I just think at the moment we still very much getting use to the new system. I like the way though it’s going to allow people like Houghton & Randell more time on the ball. Butcher gives us legs in midfield. My one concern is Lewis. I’m just not sure what type of midfielder here is. Does he like to dictate the play for example? I can’t quite figure him out.

Azaz & Miller looks like decent signings. Keep Miller fit and we have some weapon on the left. Some of his crosses are delicious. I like Law in an attacking sense. Put in a great cross second half. Got on the end of the ball in behind just before the final whistle. He just needs to develop his defensive awareness.

Mumba shows one or two glimpses, got some decent forward runs, but also l think you could see he needs more time to get use to our system,as he got caught out when in possession.

l do think this next forward signing is important in the sense we need a spearhead to this formation. Not saying the others can’t do it, but l think if we going to compete at the top end of the table we need something better than we already have upfront. Otherwise, we may look a good side on the eye but not have that attacking punch.
I agree. I'm not a fan of Jephcott in the deeper role but his passing today was excellent. It doesn't make any sense to have our own fox in the box playing so deep particularly now we have quality early crosses being pinged in by Miller. And how often did the ref get in the way?! I think he was so impressed by our passing and movement he wanted to join in.

Randell needs to start more. He will get better and better with game time.

We’ve got the makings of a good solid team who create. We just need that finish.

Randell flourished by having Butcher alongside him, Houghton might even play better if he had another central midfielder next to him instead of being on his own.
Or even have Houghton and Randell together.

I agree to an extent with those saying Jephcott needs to be on the end of things to get the most out of his finishing, but how would you achieve that without having an isolated front two?

I think it's a balance with Jephcott, if paired with Hardie he is the one to drop deep as we need Hardie higher to stretch defences.
However he is also a poacher and you look at the likes of Kane and Sherringham who come deep but also have the instinct to know when to be in the box to finish a chance.
I think Jephcott is under rated, he's not been at his best at the end of last season but he's a key cog in the machine.
