I've never understood the 3 - 5 - 2 system when we don't have proper wing backs who are attack minded with speed. Garrick came onto fill that role but I prefer him upfront TBH

Mayor may be able to play on the wing but I don't see that as his best position. One of his key attributes is to draw defenders to him creating space for a winger to run into. Unfortunately I think its likely that Broom will continue to struggle show the energy we saw in his early performances. Team formation is a difficult thing and perhaps one for the experts (we have plenty of those now, not just on here ;)) we never seem very solid defending the wings, but at the same time at home I'd like to see one of the midfield players playing closer to the front two.

Wing Backs. They are meant to go end to end. Their primary role is holding the width, they defend with the 3 CB's and then in transition they are to motor up the pitch to the dead ball line if needed. They need stamina and pace. They need to be decent crossers of a ball (Like the 2 at Liverpool) They need the tactical knowledge (imparted from training and match experience) to know when to go and when to hold the width or just sit in.
I think they look confused at times and theres not much cover from the midfield when one of them bombs on - I mean Houghton should drop in to either side to prevent the chasm like gaps we saw today.

Just watched the goals via the Sky Sports website- Lincoln's 2nd goal is the stuff of nightmares - totally unmarked & a free header- i just hope this does not become habit forming
Sickening way to lose but you just can't switch off like that else you will be punished & boy we were punished

I like Mayor. He is a maverick. I just think though if we are honest his final shot / cross / pass has so far let him down in an Argyle shirt.

The problem is when he is in central midfield the game can pass him by unfortunately. Don’t get me wrong he has his odd moment, but that isn’t enough for a team who goal is to eventually get promotion.

I wouldn't say totally unmarked. Just out jumped. But we have conceded very few goals from corners this season.

It's an interesting view, under Lowe we very rarely ventured from 3 5 2. I guess if we had 4 4 2, you would have to drop either Wilson or Scar as there would be a lack of pace. Then how would we accommodate Connor Grant? What do we have in terms of out and out wingers? Broom and Mayor could play wide I guess, with Houghton and Pan in the middle. It doesn't seem that balanced to and certainly if we were over run in midfield today (I wasn't there so only based on the themes I've seen written on here) going to 4 4 2 isn't going to help that tactically.

I think the most significant change we could make to the squad in terms of a plan B is a tall, strong, aggressive striker. That is not within our skill set at the moment and would be an easy way to tactically change the way we play without having to shuffle anyone around. Hopefully the interest in this lad from Ireland comes off and he can be that facilitate that alternative approach that some games will call for. A fit George Cooper would also have been a real asset to this squad, offers something different to other players at WB or in midfield.
For me in 442...
Cooper
Law
Scar
Wilson
Bolton
Mayor/Grant
Randell
Camara
Broom/Garrick
Hardie/Ennis
Jephcott
Or something like that.

I agree he is a winger and probably a great five aside player. Unfortunately his best position is as an impact sub, as he proved against MK away, shame he wasn’t there today in that role.

Would 4-4-2 improve us? I just don't see 3-5-2 as the be all and end off....
Agree. I am hoping that Shuey will switch away from 3-5-2 and towards a 3-1-4-2 / 3-1-5-1.

I understand the need for a stable system- but I fear that 3-5-2 is just too inflexible and the amount of matches over the last two years that turned out to “a game of two halves” speaks for itself. It speaks of an inflexible system, which can’t be varied when the opposition changes things around.

Grant can beat a man and cross a ball but unfortunately imo Joe Edwards can’t.

How does Critchlow get a 5 he was clueless and had no idea how to play the position. He was out of position for almost the whole game ,added to that he was uncomfortable on the ball just giving it back to Scarr. A dreadful debut.
I cannot believe this reading of Critchlow's performance. I thought he had a very solid game and looks a good addition to the squad.
