Trouble at the End (32 fans banned)

Has anyone here actually experienced a football punch-up? Last time we played the Daggers at their Dagenham ground my son-law and I were given two free tickets by a friendly native whilst we stood in the queue for tickets. These were amongst the Dagenham supporters, but no problem. As the game kicked off I explained to my son-in-law who was who in our team when the elderly chap (about my age, early 70s) beside me said ‘ere are you an effing Plymuff supporter?’ When I said yes, he said ‘well you shouldn’t effing well be sitting there’. I politely explained how we got the tickets, and why he shouldn’t find our presence a problem. However, as he effed and Jeffed away, the more politely I responded the angrier he got. Finally I told him, again politely, to stop being silly.

At this point he stood up and put himself in a boxer pose, making it clear that if I didn’t move he would thump me. I was deciding whether to hit him first (bad idea, we’d be thrown out) or simply duck, when he suddenly said ‘ right, I’m off to get the stewards and have you thrown out’. Two minutes later, six stewards ran along the touch line and faced up in front of us, (we were sitting close to the touch line). Seeing an elderly me, and my son in law who looks just like the middle-aged teacher he is, they scratched their heads, shrugged and went away. Mr Angry never returned.

Good/amusing story Mervyn, Thanks, on top of which I can’t but help note the irony that Dagenham is The Ground where the Away supporters were given the best stand & facilities, ….but at least you ”live to tell the tale”

Can we take it then, that you consider this type of criminal behaviour acceptable, in the 21st Century? It wasn't acceptable to the vast majority of football supporters back in the 70s and 80s so why should it be so now?

Affray - A person is guilty of affray if he uses or threatens unlawful violence towards another and his conduct is such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his personal safety.

If found guilty, Affray carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.

I rather suspect that there would have been many tens, maybe even hundreds of people in that section of the ground who feared for their own personal safety.

So, do you...and "Chip Green" and "Plymouth 1970" and "Loyal 1970" and all the others who seem to want to make light of the situation that unfolded, do you condemn this or do you condone it?
I don't really want to say your thick....but can you highlight the part where i say its acceptable.....because I struggling to see that part.

So your point is we should just accept it and move on?

This stuff needs cracking down upon, actual deterents needed.

No-one should be just ignoring it as "it happens get over it".
Christ alive.....I didn't say accept it and move on.....I said there will always be somebody up for this type of behaviour ... we've had it for 50 odd years....so prevention is always better than cure....I'll say it again Argyle and or the stewards got it horribly wrong...so instead of sticking10 or twenty stewards in the Devonport end where nothing ever happens other than checking your ticket and frequently being pests because there is never anything happening in the Devonport end....stick them inbetween fans and away fans.

Had lots of punch ups on the pitch, but when you played against pub teams on Hackney Marshes that was rather par for the course. One football hooligan related incident where I got hospitalised by Fulham supporters (40 years ago), broken knuckle, several stitches in my head and damage to my left ear that has left me slightly deaf. Some near misses along the way and a realisation at an early age that 1) I don't like fighting 2) I'm not very good at fighting. These days I can be overpowered by a small child so would definitely rather eat a pasty and watch the footy.

Okay… Is it important that there’s a police presence rather than stewards? Obviously there’s an additional cost involved with both so I guess everyone will have to pay a bit extra to meet that cost or else the club could divert finances from some other area. It’s a pity if that is the solution though because I am sure there are other things that the police could be doing with their resources.

I do find it a bit odd that a bunch of people might be able to manage to control their behaviour if there are 4 or 5 police personnel sitting near them in the ground and not need to respond to the provocation of opposition fans spilling over onto the pitch when they celebrate a goal and someone lighting a blue smoke canister but can’t control themselves otherwise.
Unfortunately you do have to police it...what is the point of having them sat outside talking cobblers during the game ...if they were sat next to the Wigan fans nothing would have happened....its no good moaning and saying well that's money the club could spend elsewhere....why do shops have security now, and bouncers on pub doors, traffick wardens....because if they are not there someone at some point is going to take advantage... your in dream world if you think you will ever stop it any other way.

So it's effectively like messing around when the teacher leaves the classroom. In that they need constant supervision.

I previously described these people of having the mental age of a 10 year old, but now I feel like even that is too generous...

"It'll never go away - fact" - your certainty on this statement is impressive. I don't know if it will or not, but wouldn't it be wonderful if we could, just maybe, educate these morons to not behave like petulant toddlers when nasty Wigan Athletic celebrate scoring a goal?
An other dreamer....so naive its unbelievable.

Well I prefer his dream to your nightmare. And by saying it’s “fact” that it’ll never end in the history of the world, something you couldn’t possibly know is just very silly. Guessing about the future of humanity isn’t a “fact”.

I'm going to both Rochdale and Sunderland in coming weeks, interesting to see if the recent bans will affect the behaviour of some of our more problematic fans. To be fair, and in the interest of inclusivity, I've been to most away games this season, and the home 'lads' at pretty much every game have managed to position themselves near us in the away end, Shrewsbury and Lincoln in particular spring to mind, causing the Old Bill and stewards problems. It's certainly not a problem specific to Zoo Corner or Argyle.

Me? Thick? Point number one, you have never, in any of your diatribes condemned the violence, or threats of violence, that took place at Home Park last Saturday.

Secondly, Me? Thick? Hmmm! Where to start? Firstly, it's YOU'RE - it has an apostrophe in it. Then we have IT'S - it has an apostrophe in it because it is a shortening of two words, it and is. Shall we discuss your inability to construct a sentence? I believe you probably meant to type "because I AM struggling..."

Finally, ellipsis. I know, it's probably a big word for you but it's the little dots that appear in sentences. It's only ever three and they are there to display missing words, or even sentences. What you should have used, of course, was commas but then you wouldn't use a comma before the word but unless you were dividing two independent clauses, which you're not.

I could go on but I am bored now.

Once again, I'm sure you'd have been one of those saying "women haven't had equal voting rights for over 200 years, it'll never be equal so why bother" had you been living in the late 19th / early 20th century. Thankfully, it's barmy to think now that they deserve anything other than equal rights.

It'll take time, of course. A hell of a lot of education is needed, and, as others have suggested, a study into why this kind of behaviour occurs. As well as condemning any sort of "hoolie" behaviour from the (what is thankfully now a vast) majority of people, including the club's hierarchy (which again thankfully Mr Hallett has done).
