Championship and ‘smaller’ clubs

Are we at the point now where financially the smaller clubs cannot compete In the championship?

Assuming that Pompey, Bolton & Derby are promoted and dare I say Rotherham, Huddersfield and potentially us (just potentially) are relegated, it’s realistically only a small handful of league one clubs could even dream of a long spell in the championship. Argyle, Charlton And ???? Based on the size of the club it’s very difficult for clubs of our size the compete let alone the rest.

absolutely. This is now the premier league 2. It's been happening for years and now finally arrived with this new sky deal. The gap is getting bigger and bigger. The pyramid is being killed.

We missed out all those years ago when the Premier league started and we went down to tier 3. I just hope history doesn't repeat itself.

How long before the big 4 or 6 or whatever join a European league and leave a Premier league 1 and 2 with 20 clubs each?

As soon as they can work it financially. Its the only thing holding them back, the money men have arrived and just want the franchise league. The reason the super league failed had nothing to do with the lack of relegation.

Personally them leaving can't happen soon enough

It is. And there are three leagues within the premiership - top 6, next 10, relegation fodder.

Only the top 6 matter in the eyes of the media and press.

The championship is the graveyard of premiership, and is fast becoming a three tier league too.

Money, eh? Corrupts everything, absolutely.

What's been interesting, and ominous, this season is how the promoted/relegated teams have fared.

In the Prem, despite points deductions for two poor teams, it looks like the three promoted teams are going straight back down.

In the Championship, the three relegated teams are part of a top four that is streets ahead of the rest. There's a good chance all three go straight back up.

Something needs to be done to redress the balance there. It does also show what an incredible job McKenna has done.

Its surely not about size of club so much as losses owners are prepared to sustain? For example our revenue I think is projected to be reasonably healthy by championship standards, certainly nowhere near the bottom, the comparatively low budget is due to the fact unlike most owners Simon is not continuing to pump additional millions into the playing squad.

It's not clear what can be done under the current rules, even this hard cap on spending the Premier League clubs are mooting would only have been breached by Chelsea on two occasions out of every club that would have been subject to it over the past 10-15 years.

If Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest then you could make an argument that the Championship is home to the bigger clubs, outside of the top 6.

I dont blame Simon at all, but I would not have a problem if somebody wanted to put money into the club to allow to compete, provided it was done by way of equity injection, not loans. Indeed that is what Simon wants to, he has explained more money will have to come in to make us competitive in the top half of the table, so a bit hard to criticise other chairmen when our ambition is to do the same thing.
