What book are you reading?

Just finishing up the Restless Republic by Anna Keay. It follows the lives of everyday people in the decade following the execution of Charles I. A really good book and recommended. Written in a way that keeps it fairly light yet also engaging and educational.

Next up is "Beyond the Wall" by Katja Hoyer - A view of East Germany from within apparently.

Those both sound excellent - thank you for this!

Just started reading "The Berlin Wall" by Frederick Taylor, as it happens.
I'm looking forward to getting into it. My boss when I worked in Hamburg (81-84) was East German. Lovely guy and I found it difficult to imagine how it was for him not having seen most of his loved ones for years.
We'll have to compare books when we finish!

Just read Nuclear War: A Scenario by Annie Jacobson. Absolutely terrifying in how plausible it is. We're 72 minutes away from a nuclear apocalypse at any time. Extremely well written though, and appears to be impeccably researched.

I've read that too, it is an extremely uncomfortable read isn't it. Almost Threads-esque in its impact. I hope the powers that be have read it.

Just finished Rory Stewart’s Politics on the Edge. Very good read. Gave an interesting insight to behind this thinking on his leadership campaign tactics. I’d forgot his comment about Boris and Pinocchio.

Irrespective of your politics, it does offer an interesting vignette of someone who does not appear a normal career minded politician.

What surprised me was that the bloke at the till said “Good book, if he been elected leader the Tories would not be in the mess they are.” Never had a book seller say that sort of thing before.

Just finished this.
Good, but not as riveting as I'd hoped.
More about the politics of the time and not too much about the people involved.
I imagine your Hoyer book may have been better, Mpt?

Its certainly different to what I expected so far (Have just moved house so my reading time seems to have diminished considerably whilst I'm told what fix next..)

She doesn't paint a picture of a downcast communist state but instead seeks to shine light on it and show the different cultural and social aspects that we may not have been aware of. Its fascinating and well worth a read..

Sounds like the opposite of the one you read to be honest!

I'm currently re-reading Emile Bronte's Wuthering Heights (haven't read it since I did my English degree). I forgot just how bloody good a novel it is.

Jonathan Wilson’s The Names Heard Long Ago. About the influence of Hungarian coaches on football tactics, particularly in South America. Really good.

I've been meaning to read that myself for aaages. Will def have to pick that up at some point soon.
Don’t wait Quinny, get it now. Best book I’ve read in years. Slow start, but develops into a brilliant plot. I’d never heard of the author, Martin Cruz Smith, but just learned that this became the start of an eleven book series, and they all have similarly outstanding reviews.

Almost finished 'Guiding Me Home and Away', by 70s shin pad shunner Dave Thomas. For the 70s nostalgia and the dog aspect.
Next will be 'Woke is Dead' by Piers Morgan.

I don't read many books but the ones l have l very much enjoyed.

I highly recommend any of Peter Kay's book. The guy is just has a brillant way with setting the scene.

Anything by co writers Dave Gorman / Danny Wallace are great books. Going around the world to find other Dave Gorman's was just a fantastic book. 'Yes Man' was written by Danny Wallace. The film is OK with Carey but the book is 100 times better.
