I cannot believe for one moment that this amount of money would be made available such that it needed a cheque to clear. It would be done by fast electronic transfer in as little as 10 minutes if need be.

Online payments can take several working days to clear too. My current bank (unfortunately) takes 3-5 working days to process payments online.

Not if you use an IMT [Immediate Money Transfer]. If you relied on BACS credits for buying and selling houses, I suspect there would be many solicitors slitting their throats under the pressure of wanting to satisfy Pickfords men as they wait outside a house to unload.
