I wonder if tonight has crystallised a few things for the boss.

If Camara is going then assuredly we would get a half decent amount in for him. Then reinvest this to the squad.

I don't know, it's frustrating having this situation rumbling on - the club needs clarity.

I'd prefer him to stay personally.

Camara won’t be going anywhere until he’s proved his fitness and could pass a medical.

Me too.....
Breaks up play and drives us forward but I agree could do with him definitely staying or leaving

If Butcher was brought in as a replacement for Camara then, on initial impressions, we haven't stuck to the rule of bringing in better than what's gone out

I remember Camara being awful in some of his early games. Wasn't he subbed before half time somewhere? It's way too early to judge players ability to fit in to the team.

Camara at least was involved even when he had a shocker in one particular game... Butcher so far has been the dictionary definition of anonymous in the minutes he's played. I hope to god he has more to offer because so far it's been minimal

He came on as a sub when we were 3v0 down and had 10 men. What do you want from him?

I've seen 3 other performances from him and I'm yet to discern what his contribution is supposed to be. That's what I'm saying.
Is he a ball winner? No evidence of this.
Is he going to drive us forward? No evidence of this.
Is he a creator with an eye for a pass? No evidence of this.
Does he like to get a rasping shot off? No evidence of this.
What's his actual specialism?

Butcher was substituted at half time against Peterborough last Wednesday and dropped to the bench on Saturday and last night. Obviously the manager has his doubts.
Of the two new permanent signings this season one is out with a long term injury and the other isn’t first choice for his position. But it’s OK as we got our top targets to sign.

The manager doesn't see him as first choice at the moment, so played him in a cup game and not in a league game. That doesn't mean he has doubts about him at all. My point is that it's way too early to judge players. There were comments about Whittaker before the game started last night and then he showed what he is capable of.

I don't think that's entirely true. A misconception of a medical is that they go there and have some sort of test they have to pass which isn't really the case. A medical is more of a risk assessment than a fitness test. There is a good podcast somewhere with the Arsenal doctor that explains it well, he recommended they would get 2-3 years out of a player, Wenger sold him 3 years later for a decent fee and 6 months later he was crocked. I forget the player or exact details but someone else may have listened to it and be able to provide a link.

Butcher was excellent against Barnsley. Apparently had a poor game v Fleetwood, much of it playing out of position. Then three briefer appearances, the most recent of which occurred when we were already 3-0 and a man down.

He's 6 ft 2 and has played as a centre back so my guess is that he's intended to provide a bit more solidity/physical presence in midfield.

We didn't previously have a natural defensive midfielder. Given how effectively Charlton pressed us last night and the lack of protection the midfielders and wing backs provided for the defenders, rather than mystifyingly making Butcher this week's scapegoat we should be lamenting that he didn't start the game.

If we sell Camara we might do something. Otherwise l think we are going to have to work out our problems with what we have.

Personally I think we need a striker and then let jephcott go out on loan
It’s hard to see how Jephcott fits in to the plan at the moment. He’s not going to be the one-up-front striker and there are better options in the 10 role. He seems to have slipped below Ennis as the first attacking change. It’s just not obvious what role he plays in the squad anymore. If we were a 4-4-2 team he might well thrive as the second fox-in-the-box type striker, but we‘re not and we’re not going to be. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was allowed to leave if the right offer came in but with his recent lack of game time and consequent lack of goals/impact in games it‘s hard to see how anyone would want to pay anything for him. A loan to a League 2 club might be the answer but would he want to drop down a level?
