He always seemed to be a bit on the heavy side to me and certainly not very quick. But he did have the knack of arriving at the right time during that purple patch, although he also had more than just that. I remember he could turn really well in the box and had a good ‘football brain’ to get the ball in tight areas and lay it off well. That’s what had me convinced he’d have a good career. There was one goal in particular that sticks in my mind he scored at the DE to win a game late on against stubborn opposition (possibly Wimbledon?) – which was a beauty from the left side of the area when he quickly turned, made a yard of space for himself and hit a hard low shot inside the right side-netting. It was a real quality strike. I can only think it is a confidence/ mental thing unless (or possibly aswell) he has carried a long term injury. Such a shame – I’d love to hear he is back playing, scoring and having a decent career.

I recall that back in the 1980s that the great Paul Mariner spent a while playing at CB for Arsenal. Maybe Luke could fit the part ? Ok, not for Arsenal but you never know and we’re a bit lacking there at the moment!

I remember him coming on at Wigan. He made a real impact and a proper nuisance of himself and got the opening goal in a game we were under the cosh. I was gutted to see him fall out of favour but he just didn’t suit the formation which ultimately got us 101 points. There is something so appealing about an unconventional looking striker.

Remember it well. It was Gillingham. I remember thinking that he might have been a flash in the pan the season before but the way he took this goal made me think he was the real deal. He had a decent season scoring 12 in 31 starts, but he was never the same after the MK game. I still look out for him to see if he’s scored a goal or made the team, but as others have said that’s rare these days. Hopefully he can get himself somewhere where he can resurrect his career.

Sad case. He clearly cannot cut it at L2 level.
He needs to drop down to play regularly and get scoring opportunities.

It seems to have worked well for Tyler Harvey.

I doubt Torquay or Truro would rush to sign him

Maybe Southern league would suit or as he is Welsh, their league.

At the moment he is heading for an end of contract and the unattached category.

Weird story all round. I fonud it equally strange that he joined our players on their end of season lap of the pitch after the Hull game last year, when he was contracted to another club. Yes the players had family and friends out on the pitch but for another club's player to join them was frankly odd.

He got a break at Argyle when he was full of confidence, and did well with us, his local club, in familiar surroundings with people who knew him well. Unfortunately (for LJ) Argyle progressed faster than he could. Moving away to a different environment away from friends and family with coaches who maybe didn’t get as much out of him it’s unsurprising his level dipped. If you’re enjoying football less, you don’t bring the same intensity and belief to training and games. It can become a vicious cycle. The margins are fine in football and you can fall a long way.

Whether or not Luke turns it around, he still had a great career scoring a lot of goals for his local club, playing a big role in our history (we would never have got promotion or survived in L1 without him) and a bunch of other highlights, including playing against the European Champions. He’s still young enough to do anything he wants in life, having already lived out many people’s dream for a few years, and is probably richer than 99% of lads his age.

It’s certainly not a hard luck story.

Newport fans on X don't seem very happy about it. Most saying he's their best striker and they can't understand why he's not playing for them.
