For me I wouldn’t put a 16 year old in our first team squad as you would just alert other clubs to our talented youngsters.

Then get them to sign with us on their 17th birthday - then put them in the squad when we can then control what fee he could be transferred for.
I was thinking the same. Once he has signed, get him in the sqaud and plenty of last 5 minutes sub appearances to increase the fee.

A bit naive I fear JiC. I'd imagine almost every club in the top two divisions (and many abroad) is already aware of the best prospects around the country regardless of whether they play in their respective first team. Look how many academy transfers go on. If he's good enough, play him. Can only increase his value.

Top clubs would know about him whether he played for our first team or not, they’re scouting kids all over the world.

Yes, we need to remember we are a T3 Academy. Youth coaches / scouts in T1 and T2 academies will know our good players because of inter-Academy games at all ages.

You’ll be surprised how snobby parents get, even at U8 level about “being scouted by an academy” and which tier it is just before they are signed into academies.

We must keep this young lad at all costs - Argyle have done all the hard work in getting the lad up to scratch, and it is only fair we benefit - however, we know life - or football - isn't fair!

I know for a fact Stephens wants to return to Argyle at some point.
Let’s hope his ability and our league converge at a mutually beneficial time :)

I doubt he’ll play L1 next year (if we go down), equally we won’t want him in 3 yrs if we’re promoted back to championship. Our paths may never cross.

It really grinds my gears that a club like ours can invest so much time and effort into developing a local talent, then they can be cherry picked by one of the bigger fish for effectively peanuts.

The system is rotten and as with most walks of life, the fat cats are able to get fatter by pillaging from the smaller ones.

If he goes for next to nothing it will leave a really foul taste in my mouth.
Up to £60k fixed fee and up to a further £8m in future payments depending how their careers pan out is hardly peanuts.
