I lost my best friend through suicide we were both 30 at the time, his mum and mine are best friends so we were in each other's life since birth. Even till this day 5 and half years on there isn't a day goes by without a thought towards him.
Regret
Helplessness
Guilt
In the end I just hope he has found peace and his soul can rest.
Please please if feel like you can't carry on talk to someone, tell them how you feel. I know there isn't a magic switch but just know people love you and you are amazing, you are loved. 💚💚💚💚

And also remember as you sit behind your keyboard think about how you would feel if somebody wrote that about you or your family. What you write could be the difference.

I was struggling a bit late last year with My Dads dementia getting worse.

I then discovered that the Plymouth Argyle community trust host a Wellbeing, Walk and Talk at Central Park. They meet outside the Life Centre most Thursdays and the walks are generally from 12:00pm to 2:00pm.
I've been on a few and it's good just to get out and about.

If you know someone suffering from depression get them to look at the short video " All Blacks don't cry" which is available on You Tube. It is the true story of John Kirwan an All Black Legend and includes advice on overcoming these issues. When he opened up on his problems there was a noticeable increase in the number of men in New Zealand seeking help when they realised that depression is not a sign of weakness.

Kirwan was later knighted for his on going work in the mental health area.

I help run an online gaming group and it’s frightening how many young men are suffering. As one (not so young) myself, I pushed for us to have a resource section on discord, with organisations to get in touch with, and actively nurture positive engagement. I’m sick of losing people.

I have a bunch of links ready to go if the site would like them. Geared towards men specifically.

I've been open in the past about my struggle with alcoholism (nearly five years sober now) and my mental health struggles: at my worst I was picked up by the police when found "in a distressed state", I was on a priority list if I went missing (apparently), I've had psych consults ... I very nearly ended it all at Burrator several years ago.

Look, there's great links here and great suggestions about who to contact, and they're infinitely more experienced and qualified than me to give advice or have a talk to. But if anyone does feel ... shame or guilt about the thought of contacting them: don't feel bad. Even if someone doesn't feel it, they are valued and loved by those around them. I am more than happy to be contacted by DM if anyone does feel the need to have a chat.

Top man Quinny. I too am long time sober and have had times where the darkness was so bad that suicide became (I thought) the only option. Likewise, anyone who just wants a chat, I am here. Nothing, and I mean nothing, will shock me.

Congratulations on being sober for 5 years. Know a few people who’s had struggles with drink and drugs

Thanks for starting this thread and to all who have contributed. Some good advice and place to seek help listed.

As someone who has struggled with mental health on and off for the last 25 years I cannot stress the importance of talking about it and seeking the assistance that is out there. Before suffering my first bout of serious depression which took me to some very dark places back in 2000 I would never have dreamt that just talking about it to a complete stranger would have been of any use whatsoever. Finding people who knew how to help and would sometimes just listen to me undoubtedly saved my life. This is invaluable advice to anyone who is in a similar position. Please seek the help that is out there, life has so much to offer even when there seems no hope. From being in a position where I seriously considered taking my own life on more than one occasion the last 12 months has offered me the chance to be at 2 of my children's weddings and a first grandchild is on the way.

I have also been able to give a little back sponsoring many people all around the country to help them recover from addiction, some of who have been in as low a position as I have felt on several occasions.

Never give up hope no matter how dark things may seem.

From experience the NHS talking therapies team were excellent.

Having gone through a crisis earlier this year I can't fault them. They followed up on the initial consultation and gave excellent support and direction moving forward.

To add to this thread, It's important to listen those around you not just hear, there is a difference .Take time to reassure and support your friends and loved ones.

Most important, as a care giver, SET CLEAR BOUNDARIES for yourself so that the person needing support knows where they stand. Don't promise things you can't fulfill, the sufferer will soon realise and retreat further, leading to more trauma and anxiety.

None of my friends would ever describe me as weak or needy. I'm not. However my 'crisis' came out of the blue. If you have any causes for concern seek help. YOU ARE NOT WEAK OR NEEDY either.

Always available initially by PM.

Poor mental health is certainly a growing trend.
Those 'Andyman' and 'Mandown' groups posted above look very good and not dissimilar to something I'm involved in in East Cornwall.
After drug induced breakdowns in my late teens and serious flirtations with suicide , for me it was a faith based journey that brought me hope. I read the verse " come to me you who are heavy laden and you'll find rest for your soul" on the side of a church and believed it. That was the start of a great journey.
I later worked in rehab for three years and have held various pastoral roles before and after ordination, alongside being a builder. The current group I'm involved with is a mens mental health / recovery group. It has grown a fair bit this past year and birthed two other groups in other towns. It's a brilliant bunch of blokes with some wild backgrounds and a decent proportion of Argyle fans in it (inc previously naughty ones :)). It has a faith element ( as do AA and NA to some degree) but all are welcome. Feel free to PM.
