Strikers or lack of?

It would have been nice to round off the window with a striker but it got me thinking of the Sturrock 2001/2 season with 102 points.
Top scorer was Graham Coughlan, a centre back, who used to raid up front for set pieces etc. We spread goals around the team. I haven’t analysed it but seem to remember some very organised defensive away battles a grabbing late points by keeping going to the last second.
I was surprised to see we only conceded 28 goals all year!
Could we grab enough points from the next 16 games organised in a similar way? The defensive signings suggest it could be.
Here’s hoping 🤞
So no pressure Maxi and Katic then!

I am not worried about the lack of a new striker. We have three strikers for one position and two more who can play the role, it is already the best covered position on the pitch. Hardie is coming back into scoring form and these days there is not the same expectation as there was for a striker that can score 15 goals plus - very few championship teams have one. As already said, sort ourselves out defensively and the goals will follow. It is already happening

We do no need to improve set pieces though. Puch may be tearing it up but like every Argyle player for years he is crap at corners.

Agree, and we had a midfield that drove us up the pitch (Friio!💚)!
We got bodies in the box, something that was missing all this season, up to now.

Whoever comes to our club has to be the right fit for our club & how Miron sets up his team
Spending silly money on a Striker that might not be the right fit, might not hit the ground running & may not have the understanding or be on the same wavelength as the players around him how is that cost effect for a club like ours

If we are looking for Strikers surely it will be in the Summer Transfer Window when Miron will know what league we will be in next season & he can mould his squad for the coming season

January has always been about tweaking squads & panic buying for squads that are either in the promotion race or scrapping at the bottom of the league

Agree, this window was about making the team solid and hard to beat and the club presumably paid significant sums to achieve this. A fourth striker was never going to be priority unless the right one came along, but this window was always going to be difficult one to make that sort of signing for reasons we know.

I would have liked to have seen a strapping centre forward, but if Tijani is already here and can be brought fully up to speed then it's not really necessary. We have made three decent signings that should make us a much more solid proposition.

Would have loved a striker in before the window closed but we have what we have. Not sure if TJ is 100% fit yet but not wanting to be to cliché he is something like a new signing due to his unavailability with injuries, we have Hardie, Wright, Baidoo, Al Hajj, Obafemi, Bundu as well who need to pick up the goal threat no longer with us with Whittaker and Cissoko not at the club anymore, but, again the loss of Cissoko won't be that badly felt as he has hardly featured since his suspension and injury. Also, 3 goals each isn't a massive gap to fill across 7 players and with added height and Puchacz delivery we might be able to be more dangerous from set-pieces!!!! Since the Burnley disaster we scored 4 goals across 2 games against an automatic promotion chasing team and a play off chasing team so we are more than capable of being a threat despite the non arrival of attacking reinforcements.

The most telling thing for me (if rumours are to be believed) is that we were chasing a striker until very late. That says that the coach believes we were short in that area(for whatever reasons).

We weren't successful so we go with what we have. Personally I agree that you build from the back...but that stops you losing, and we need wins. We will likely be in games longer now but when those moments arrive to turn the draw into a win, that is where Strikers show their worth.

I think we now have plenty of forwards but only 2 strikers and only one is proven and that is RH. I hope the other, TJ, comes good. Is that enough to build a rescue act on?...I don't know, I'm just a fan so we strap in and enjoy the ride as always.

The fact that we clearly didn't feel the need to really spend big on a striker mean that MM will use Tijani at some point and that he must be getting towards full fitness. I'd really like to see the big guy on the pitch more - which may coincide with a return from Szucs who is our long throw specialist who would complement Tijani's aerial presence more than any of our other strikers.

What worries me more tho is that Bundu might be forced to play up front when I think his best position is RW. I certainly wouldn't play Baidoo up front at all.

Yep, I'm thinking this also. The fact that we didn't go all out with urgency to get another striker clearly shows (IMHO) that Tijani is going to be the guy. MM has stated previously that he likes the big guy up front - and we only have one of those on the books right now whose natural position is as a CF. He's going to be rusty as all hell and so MM is going to be patient with him. Let's see what happens, I suppose.

Interesting comments from Peterborough owner on Sky Sports last night. His business model is to buy strikers with potential and sell them on. That position he said is where the money is. He won't take loan players up front as he sees it as developing them for somebody else to benefit from.
He is more than happy for loanee's in midfield or defense as the financial bnefits of sell-ons is not so beneficial.
Spoke very well.

Others have said that we have a number of players who can play up front. MM's style of play requires a front man who can (1) hold the ball up to bring others into play, and (2) can head the ball. I like Hardie and hope he has a strong end to the season, but he's not that type of striker (think Tommy Tynan and Mickey Evans). I think we need to pin our hopes on TJ who hasn't yet had a chance to show what he can do.
