Sly and the Family Stone great band and music. "If you want me to stay" one of my favourites. Sly Stone, someone who set the template for others to take inspiration from, most definitely.

That's such sad news. I admit to being a bit of a fan of the Beach Boys and Wilson. He really was a troubled genius.

Not sure whether to play 'Smile' or 'Pet Sounds' tonight. Maybe both....

Both and 20 Golden Greats. He was most definitely a little Mozart.

Agreed. I was lucky enough to see him and his band (The Wondermints?) at Glastonbury 2005. So glad I did.
I was lucky enough to see the actual Beach Boys twice: Wembley Stadium in 1976, and Yankee Stadium in 1991 (just as an afterthought to a Yankees game, it seemed to us gobsmacked Brits who knew nothing about it in advance).

Even back then I was well aware of how sweeeeeet it all was. 1976 was beautiful to witness, the band already being over half a decade past their poptastic heyday but sounding like the happiest band in the world; and 1991 was a thrilling surprise.

Now we can be sure that there is no new joy to be had. I just wish that he'd had a life that came close to echoing his uplifting music and lyrics.
