Here is why ultimately we should have taken back Schuey when we got the chance. Tom has improved over the last 12 months and I am still fully behind him. However, he still struggles with (a) how to set up differently for different sides and (b) how to make timely changes in game. These are both things Schuey is excellent at as we saw to our cost last season. Tom relies on hitting a formula that works and then riding it for as long as possible. Unfortunately it took him half a season to hit that formula and with the loss of Tolaj and Kane/Ralls it seems that the formula no longer works

It's pointless talking about what we should have done re Schuey. But it is true nevertheless that Tom needs to be able to change something that isn't working, and yesterday we didn't see evidence of that until too late. But he's still relatively inexperienced so I hope he will mature as a coach.

As an aside, will be interesting to see how Muslic fares in the top flight, and whether he sticks to the style of play that worked last season.

Yes, Stockport were the better team, but their first was a deflection, their second was created by a mistake by Mitchell, and their third was a good strike from the edge of the box.

Yes, we should have done better. Yes, we did have opportunities to score but didn't put them away.

Yes 1-3 was a fair reflection of the game, but it could have been different.

We got to grips with the game after 60/70 minutes when they took off their better players, who were the difference between the two sides, and we began to get some more control of the game.

For the first game of the season it is easy to say that Stockport will be amongst the top clubs come the end of the season, but the season is long and injuries can kick in, as we well know, and this is just the start of the campaign.

As long as our season doesn't continue as last year then we will improve as we go along. We are missing Tolaj badly but our players are not yet at their peak and time is on our side.

We shouldn't get too low when we lose and we shouldn't get too high when we win.

Stockport had the better of us yesterday but the league is not won or lost on the first day.

God help us if Stockport aren't amongst the best teams.

What was he doing towards the end literally stopped running when the ball was played forward near the corner flag, it was like he just couldn’t be bothered.

As Tom said in his presser yesterday he knew the risk , and took it as he did in the Luton (h) , Huddersfield ( h) and Stockport (a) games last season. He could probably have added Cardiff and Bolton .

However he had different personnel on the pitch yesterday , who hadn't built up momentum and confidence . He now needs to work out from who he has available , who is best suited to that system / the opposition .

There has been an assumption that Mitchell and White are shoe - ins . Maybe Harding as well . At present the only players guaranteed of a place are Cooper , Ross , Boateng , Pepple and through necessity Curtis and Evans .

This is his 3rd season as a manager. When will he become not inexperienced. Anyway it was obvious to the vast majority with no experience that it wasn't working and needed to change very early in the game.

Stockport had 5 new players in their side yesterday (edited to add: and a new manager).

Exactly. We should be more settled than them so the "bedding in" argument doesn't really cut it as an excuse.
A poorer standard of pre-season opposition could be a more valid reason, coupled of course with Cleverley's tactical deficiencies yesterday.

You are not going reach perfection cohesion after 1 game of football
We have replaced the goalkeepers we have brought in 1 new player in defence, 1 new player in midfield {who heavens forbid does not live up to the esteemed standards of Ralls & Kane} but is only 24
And a player who has only been in the building for 8 days
Our players are human beings not preprogrammed robots
When a new season starts it takes upto 10 games for any teething problems to be ironed out
Our new players are still learning what makes the other players tick - the team gelling together & becoming a cohesive all functional unit takes patience & time
You don't win the league after 1 game

And you don't think all of the above applied to Stockport too? They were well organised and seem to know exactly their individual roles. We looked like a rabble who had never met.

Stockport were excellent and had a good day in the office whereas we didn't. It's only one game against the beaten play off finalists last season so it was a tough game.

Only one game in, lessons learned so we move on.

As for Evans, he's only played 2 games so give him time! People slating him for missing a few chances including a header that was identical to Pepple's miss against Exeter but no one's mentioning that!!

I thought Amechi and Ibrahim did well when they came on.
