I think they police do an amazing job and have to adapt to the situation. They have to take a hard stance at big venues like football because let’s be honest, if they were to show weakness things could go sour very quickly.

Im very much in favour of the hardline stance they take to potential offenders whilst ensuring the general public are well cared for and protected.

Seems as thou some have found the police difficult when they have in-fact placed themselves in a position to be dealt with.
Your last paragraph is so true Tug. I mentioned that I had only had 2 real issues with Police - 1 outside the Kop End at Liverpool (when I was actually in initial Police training) and secondly -

Earlier still, I went to a match at Ashton Gate. Parked up in the city centre and thought I’d go to Temple Meads to meet the away fans and be escorted to the ground.

Was advised that away fans train was being stopped at another station to avoid trouble in the city. Walked to said station (can’t remember the name - long time ago) and joined up with the away fans on arrival. Pretty rowdy lot and we were escorted to the ground. Some fairly ‘firm’ tactics, horses, dogs etc and quite right too. Several arrests enroute. Some missile throwing by home and away yobs

I put myself in that situation and should have made my own way to the ground instead of seeking out the buzz of the away escort, actually putting myself more at risk of arrest and also of attack by home fans, as escorted fans are often targeted and were on that day.

Public order police have a nightmare of a job as I subsequently found in 30 years service in all 3 front line specialist operational ranks in multiple public order operations including:-

Toxteth, Moss Side, Orgreave and other miners strike work over 18 months, Glastonbury (before it got civilised) Bournemouth v Leeds riot - probably worst riot ever seen at an English league ground, level 1 unit commander for multiple high category matches, responsible for away fans over many years.

Hope that helps Andy

Tuggers, generally you are very right. But what I witnessed was brutality and on fans that didn't deserve it. They were normal fans in a pub, not 'Casuals' wanting trouble.

It's ridiculous to turn a blind eye and simply say "all police are marvellous" on the whole they are, but the South Yorkshire crew have a fierce reputation and what I witnessed endorsed what I had read. Nothing to do with Argyle either.

Owly's obviously biased and is now simply trying to cause trouble by bringing 'Site Admin' into the debate.
Valid points Ian.

I remember going to Newcastle away for the cup game 2010 (ish?) and we were leaving the ground slowly. The police were ushering us on to ensure they could clear the area and my mate was being a bit of a plonker by walking slow. The police gave him a gentle ‘reminder’ that he wasn’t quite going quickly enough and he swore at one of them. The officer basically told him no more. My mate being a idiot swore again and in the blink of an eye he had his arm upended behind his back and he was swiftly nestled face first up to brick work of the building best to us.

They weren’t taking any crap from any one and after a few minutes or bargaining to get him ‘unfolded’ they let us on our way.

Absolutely ruthless in there approach but fair in my opinion because they warned him. And by warning him only once and acting clearly laid down the stance.

Ian - that last paragraph- really?

On Sunday I made it clear I’m not making any further comment. Andy leaves it a couple of days and starts prodding, following up with another comment about deafening silence from me.

That’s provocative and trolling and that was the intent I’m sure.

I’m not causing trouble at all. I’ve pointed out things I agree with and disagree with. As far as I know, that’s the point of this forum.

Big Alf started the thread due to reports he had heard of issues between SYP and Lincoln fans, as Argyle are due up there.
You and others have then gone completely off thread, trawling up historical issues, none of which are relevant to the thread as most of the events happened 30 or more years ago.

None of you have discussed the issues with the minority yob element among the Lincoln fans. Not surprising as they have been condemned by their own fans and SYP alike for their abhorrent behaviour. As have some Wednesday fans too.

Maybe we all need to move on and hope all goes well when large numbers of (predominantly well behaved) Argyle fans descend on S6 in January. I’ll be there too.

Bringing Site Admin into it is your fall back. Just pack it up. Enough said.

And this is a decision for you to make?

I just told a (true) anecdote from many years ago. Posted purely for entertainment/interest purposes. No intention to criticise or comment on current policing.

If you find any posts of mine 'irrelevant' you have my permission to ignore them. ;)

Groan. I didn’t make a decision for anyone Pogles, I expressed an opinion.
I didn’t originally comment on your post although now you raise it, I did think wow, is that it.
I don’t need your permission Pogles, I can do that all by my little bitty self

Thank you...and RESPECT!

I was probably in amongst the masses alongside you somewhere, in all of those events, other than Glastonbury and Bournemouth/Leeds. I had been a police officer for a whole 12 weeks when we got sent to Toxteth. Parliament Street is tattooed! :)

I appreciate that it was all many moons ago but poo sticks and there are obviously still certain elements of SYP that are carrying on the tradition!

There was no hidden agenda, no trolling. As for the time delays, don't forget that time wise, I live on another planet.

Well thank you and RESPECT to you too. So, Toxteth 1981. You were a baby - how did you manage to get there??

We were met at the services on the M6 by a Merseyside traffic officer, in an RS2000 with 3 bullet holes in it, of which he was very proud. This is what you’re coming into, he seemed to be saying to us.

What a scene of devestation Liverpool was then. 4-handed foot patrols in Hope Street amid rumors of the police station being stormed. Great, career forming days but as always at another communities downfall.

The Leeds riot was absolutely something else in football hooliganism terms. 10,000 Leeds fans with only tickets for 2,000, all intent on invading the ground. The closest officer to me on one sortie had his skull fractured when a yob dropped a lump of concrete on him from a height.

Made me smile when I read Metroace’s account of his time as a poor Leeds fan being escorted off the train.

Orgreave - not the scene of one sided police brutality often portrayed by the left wing media. My unit arrived there at about 9am before it had really kicked off. We were ambushed on the way in and battered by masses of rocks from torn down stone walls. My father and an Uncle were Yorkshire miners. Things were certainly difficult then and afterwards.

Memorable days though overall
All the best

I was 30! Fresh out of the RN, after doing my time and even more fresh out of Bruche.

I agree, Orgreave was not one sided and it was very much stirred up by Arthur Scargill and Mick McGahey. We spent the majority of our time at Shirebrook.

Football hooliganism wasn't really a big thing at Carlisle United...or Workington Reds come to that! :)

No, I meant at 12 weeks in, they let you near that horror show!

Ah ex-mob too, like myself hence the Argyle link. Spent the first half of my time as a Pompey rating but never felt the urge to go and watch them, strangely. I think maybe I started going to Argyle because I heard about this brilliant striker they had at the time, the great Paul Mariner 😎

Posts and videos on a number of social media platforms tonight of South Yorkshire Police in Sheffield 'Kettling' 500 Lincoln fans and forcing them on a train back to Lincoln whether they wanted to get a train or not! Obviously do not get the full story on Twitter etc but does not bode well for the two away games.
Same thing happened at Reading away 2004. Thames Valley Police literally shoved everyone off their double decker matchday bus and onto the train to Plymouth. I think 44 Argyle fans were arrested that day, the Evening Herald ran coverage on it. I saw first hand how vile the police behaved that day - they were out for confrontation and trouble more than any supporter I saw anyway.

Remember it well!

I was trying to get back on the London train and I was 'escorted' to the platform for the train to Plymouth.
