Obviously when dealing with large crowds of people, many of whom are intent on disorder, there will be some innocent people who are inconvenienced by Police tactics. Anybody who thinks that the Police have the time to have a conversation with every individual who wants to go in a different direction, is in cloud cuckoo land. Not to mention that the hooligan element themselves try to use that excuse to avoid Police cordons and get back to what they love doing best - causing mayhem and disorder.
Blame the real culprits, the hooligan element who create the necessity for Policing of certain matches, not the public servants doing their best to keep order. Policing at these major football grounds is a much bigger deal than dealing with a couple of hundred in the BPE. At Hillsborough for instance, like it or not, many sides in this league will see it as a major day out. Lincoln for instance, hadn’t played there since the late 70’s I think and took 3000 fans. Argyle fans will also see it the same way and can enjoy singing ‘you’re not famous anymore'.
Argyle travelling support has had its issues with hooliganism over the years, but I’m sure you wouldn’t like it if Argyle supporters in general were sweepingly referred to as yobs, in much the same way as say, Millwall are.
If Argyle are still top in January, I dare say a large number will go up to Hillsborough. All I can say to anybody who hasn’t been before is that the Policing is no different there than at any other major football ground. If any Argyle fans, or indeed Wednesday fans, cause problems, some of you may be unlucky enough to get caught up in things. There will be cordons at the Leppings Lane end - just don’t be an 4rsehole and expect to go wherever you like after the match if there is disorder.
