Emile Mpenza - it seems from Simon Walton's interview that Mpenza had no real interest in training or playing for Argyle. That would explain why Luggy wouldn't pick him. On the very few occasions that he did play he looked a class above the rest.

Oh I wish the full story would come out..........

read Luggy's autobiography, quite revealing eg one day Mpenza said he couldn't come in for training as he had taken too much viagra the night before and couldn't err settle down.

Amazed at this rewriting of history re Walton , he would continually bawl out the kids to cover his own shortcomings, people call George C "Love Island" well Walton was the original with minor celeb girlfriend, at least George is a half decent footballer, Walton found his level in non league football

Totally agree. He said he scored 12 goals in the video and was excellent and kept us up, but the truth is he scored 8 goals and that was only because he was penalty taker! He had a pot belly and barely moved from the centre circle when he was out there on the pitch, but would shout and gesticulate and get aggressive at the teenagers in the trenches with him. Also, as he acknowledges himself, no-one wanted him the same way as Bhasera, Arnason, Wright Phillips, Noone, Mason etc. had clubs phoning their agents. Walton never really had a decent option to leave and get a comparable wage. He was such bad business his wages were staggering for his ability that sticking around to hope his owed wages were paid back to him was about the best option he had.

It is interesting to see his side of the story but I felt I never really saw him get himself fit and try his best in an Argyle shirt. Even in League Two, he let himself get fat and looked like he was going through the motions. Carl Fletcher and a returning Paul Wotton in his late thirties were far, far better centre midfielders. To think he was a £750,000 signing and had played Champions League football, and then he came to Argyle and would get the run around by some Cheltenham midfielder you had never heard of. It was tragic to witness it happen.

Really interesting interview. Very under rated player....had bags of ability.
Used to have regular conversation with another player of that time who also confirmed Sturrock was a huge div. Still....decent first stint

Bags of ability? What ability was that? I don't remember him being good at passing or shooting. He stood on the halfway line and jumped up for headers and won some. He was carrying too much weight to get near any opponent which wasn't immediately near him. Hourihane's ability was obvious, as was Curtis Nelson's. Walton never looked anything other than a non-league player for Argyle. Very unsure where the bags of ability went, or ever were?

As I said....under rated

In that case Walton must be underrated by every scout, coach and manager in the country judging by his CV. His last 6 clubs have all been non-league. Since he left Argyle he hasn't been at any one club longer than a season. By comparison Conor Hourihane will be playing in a cup final tomorrow.

With phrases like "bags of ability" and "underrated", it does make me wonder if you were looking at the right player out there.

I get it.....some people are more impressed/interested in endeavour and enthusiasm. Just saying that in terms of technical ability he was very talented. Can’t account for the head on his shoulders, which combined with his injuries may account for his CV.
Remember watching him play against us the season before he signed (for Hull I think) and he ran the show. Though it was a massive signing when he came.....then his knee and the club fell to pieces.

Oh...and for the record I don’t think I’ve ever compared him to Hourihane. Hope he has a great cup final

I remember him playing for QPR at HP and getting man of the match. But rather than be excited by the signing, I distinctly remember wondering why QPR would let a so-called promising young player go to a divisional rival. They obviously took the view that £750k would benefit them in the long run more than the player. Turned out to be a wise decision!

Most interesting was the insight into the machinations of loans and transfers.
Whilst Walton acknowledges and recognises his own faults, I am left with the feeling that he doesn’t really take responsibility for the fact that so many clubs were keen to move him on. A case of early success going to his head and leading to a ‘Billy Big Balls’ attitude that obviously didn’t impress other more senior professionals.
The interview also is revealing about the shambolic way the club was run. How on earth did we complete a record signing for a player with an injury record without a medical? And the stupidity of giving him a 10% increase each year on already inflated wages beggars belief!
