That jogged a memory. I was a tacker at that time and after one hectic raid my father took us to St Judes Church, stood me on the gate posts to look towards the city centre. Everything was glowing red with the fires. He said you will remember this for the rest of your life and he was right.
My Mother was living in Kingsbridge (and teaching at West Charleton, where a number of the children who had been moved from their homes when Torcross/Slapton had been evacuated when the US forces took the area over were being taught) and she said that she could see the flames from Plymouth from that distance!

My mum (who's still alive bless he) often tells me of when they were bombed out of West Hoe.

They all (about 40 of them) had to walk to Plympton. She tells me at one stage they all stopped for a rest (at about 1130 at night) on a grassy hill somewhere (could have been Boringdon area) and they were all crying as they saw Plymouth ablaze.
